That depends entirely on the quality of the A/D converters on the sound card. Don't even try it with a standard onboard sound chip.

- "Agartha" & "Pangea" were recorded the same day (Japan 1975), in my view the latter (evening concert) is better - "Dark Magus" (live NYC 1974) relies heavily on guitars Those concerts follow the same structure. 20-25 minute long tracks with a steady Al Foster beat and guitar, soprano and (wah-wah) trumpet solo. On the 1975 concert Miles sounds weak. - At Carnegie Hall 61: great quintet tracks, but the Gil Evans orchestra parts are less interesting than the studio collaborations. Well some later Pharoah albums on Impulse! I heard are a bit cheesy, but I don't remember the titles. "Black Unity" is very good.

Still having this problem. I know some board members are Opera users--anyone know of a fix within Opera for this? I don't want to switch browsers yet again! I use the latest version of Opera (7.11) and have not yet encountered the problem (with 1024x768 and 1152x864 resolution). Are there specific threads that cause a problem?

That depends what the RVGs are compared to. Of course, most people prefer the RVGs to the Blue Note reissues from the late 80's, which are mostly bad transfers. But that does not necessarily mean that they like RVG's approach. I have not seen many people posting on the BNBB or elsewere who preferred RVGs to TOCJs. Yes, most Blue Note fans buy the RVGs, because they are easily available and cheap. That does not say anything about their preference as far as the sound is concerned. I like many RVGs, especially the pre-1955 reissues, but when I compare the others to the sound of Columbia, Impulse! or Verve reissues, I'm dissappointed by the way in which Rudy manipulates (reinvents?) the sound of these tapes. But maybe the RVGs sound right and my 1000 other jazz CDs all sound wrong ...

It's time other european governments count their deaths. Until now, Germany, Italy, Spain and other speak of 50-100 deaths. But the heatwave did not stop at the french border. It also appears that this is more a social than a medical problem. It's too easy to blame it on the lack of staff in hospitals. Most of the elderly people who were brought to hospital were dehydratated and could have survived if somebody had prevented it.

I have the SACD of "A love supreme", remastered by RVG. While it generally sounds very good (probably the same remastering as on the latest Deluxe 2CD release), the drums have been unnecessarily brightened up, while saxophone, bass and piano have the same tonal balance (rather dark) than on the previous CD releases. This also makes the tape hiss much more apparent on the drums channel. So it really seems as if Rudy had to do something to make the cymbals more audible to him. But it does not sound like the optimum balance to my ears, on my system.

That's great news. I love those vintage classical recordings from the Mercury Living Presence and RCA Living Stereo series. The Rachmaninov piano concerts played by Byron Janis are absolute classics. Let's hope they put out more interesting stuff than the Suppé overtures, the Balalaika concert and the 1812 Overture, which are are mainly audiophile demonstration discs. And a request: is it possible for you to set a certain time limit during which it is possible to edit a message without the line "This post has been edited by xxx on xxxxx" appearing? A lot of message boards have a 5 minute time limit for this, so that people can correct their spelling errors without the embarrassing edit line appearing. This line should however be there when the message is edited later. It is completely missing on the AAJ board.

BTW, this protection concerns Puccini's works. They are protected from the moment of creation until 70 years after the death of the author. It's the same in the US and Europe. Historically, the aim of the law was to allow two generations of the author's descendants to earn revenues from the works. The difference between US and european law that is often discussed here concerns neighbouring rights. In the US, the protection of a recording ends 70 years after it has been made (no reference to the death of an artist). This has been extended a few years ago. In Europe it has remained 50 years. So the Puccini estate had the right to prevent the release of the Belden CD in Europe too.
