Sony had (or still has) a SACD store on Ebay. Universal is offering a lot of box sets. Maybe the majors are using Ebay to get rid of items which are harder to sell. Some prices (starting bid) are lower than in other online stores (the Bill Evans Verve box is $214, $250 at CD Universe).

I bought the Freddie Hubbard at Zweiausendeins in Munich this week (and 20 other CDs, those 5-7 Euro prices are so dangerous ) "First light" is softer and less funky than "Red Clay" and "Straight life" and has strings arrangements. Good tunes and not cheesy at all. I knew the album before and would not have bought it if it was just OK. I definitely recommend it. There is a long live version of the title track as a bonus. The sound is very good, although the new CTI CDs are not as spectacularly improved as other Sony jazz remasters. I've also checked Milt Jackson "Sunflower" and found it enjoyable but not memorable. The same for Stanley Turrentine "Salt song", which is lacking the funky drive of "Sugar". If you are a big fan of the CTI style you will want them, but if you only need the best albums you can pass on those. The Desmond albums look interesting, but I haven't heard them.

Happy birthday Daniel, and all the best for the future

The best CD writing software for audio CDs I know is Feurio. With other programs (Easy CD Creator, WinOnCD) I often had clicking errors on my CDs, even with reduced writing speed (4x). But Feurio is much more reliable. I use it to copy complete CDs (ripping function is included) or to create compilations. It also imports MP3s and has a cover editor. It may look a bit too complicated for non-experts, because Feurio is one of the most advanced cd writer programs and has many features and setting which most users won't need. But it is definitely worth trying for the reliability alone. It is non-limited shareware, there is only a nag-screen that has to be clicked away.

The Mulligan box is supposed to be available everywhere in Europe. Brownie, if you order from amazon.de, the french VAT will be applied (+5% approximately). You can see the shipping charges on the Delivery page, but I don't know if a 4CD box set counts as 1CD or 4CDs.

That's a great price, especially when shipping is free (to DE, AUT, CH, LU).

Looking for 2 Miles Davis singles (!)
Claude replied to dave9199's topic in Offering and Looking For...
The LP is very rare because it had to be withdrawn soon after the release. I have heard it and as far as I can remember those singles are only edits of material that has been released on official LPs from that time (On the Corner, Big fun). For completists only. -

I received the calendar today from Amazon.de. The 12 photograhies are in LP size, the print quality is very good. There is a small hole at the top. I have scanned the small reproductions at the back. January: Freddie Hubbard February: Baby Face Willette -
Was that an email by Classic Records? There is no info on their website.

Strange that they still release audiophile CD versions when there is the possibility to make hybrid SACDs. I already have the Bill Evans on XRCD and the Wes Montgomery on a DCC disc, maybe I will get the Monk & Mulligan, which I have in a cheapo Monk Riverside box from Zweitausendeins.

I would like to see some Gil Melle back in circulation.

Good news! I mean the availability of Savoy on iTunes, not the Charlie Parker Remix project. Will they charge 99 Cents for every track? That would be $100 for the complete Charlie Parker Savoy sessions including alternates

Bob Mintzer is mainly known amongst hifi fans, as he records for the audiophile DMP label. I've never heard his music. www.bobmintzer.com www.dmprecords.com

I only got to listen to the Conn today (I knew the music from a mp3 copy of the Mosaic before). I´m dissapointed about the sound quality of the CD. Very muffled, recessed soundstage and lacking dynamics. Don't know if it is the recording (late 60's BN sessions never sounded great on record) or McMasters remastering. My CD is the US pressing, not the copycontrolled EU one. That being said, it is my favourite "spacey" Young session (for me "Unity" and "Into something" is the classic Larry Young).

Logical 'post-1965' contenders for U.S. RVG series
Claude replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Re-issues
I second "Expansions", in case we never get a McCoy Mosaic. Other suggestions: - Jackie McLean - Demon's dance - Tony Williams - Spring - Bobby Hutcherson - Oblique -
Mulligan Concert Jazz Band at Olympia
Claude replied to Shrdlu's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I have this set too and highly recommend it. It is one of the best of the Laserlight/Delta music box sets of "Europe 1" concerts, together with the Miles/Trane concert. The Mulligan set has now also been released on a hybrid SACD, which is very surprising for a budget label. I would not bet on a noticeable sound quality improvement though. Amazon Germany sells the SACD for 17 Euro (the 2CD set is 10 Euro). Other SACD titles include Armstrong, Ellington, Adderley and Peterson concerts from the series: http://www.deltamusic.de/sacd.php For a complete listing of the "Europe 1" series, download the Jazz flyer from Delta Music: http://www.deltamusic.de/neuh.php -
