I spotted this CD of Bob Belden's Turandot this morning: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...egory=1056&rd=1 As most of you will know, it is an extremely rare CD, because the album had to be withdrawn due to legal problems with the Puccini estate. So it was surprising to see it at $8 and only two hours to go. Could this be because of the damaged booklet? I was beginning to hope for a unique opportunity and was ready to bid up to $25. But then the price rocketed up to $76.

I guess Feather would not have written this stupid line if he had known that his notes would be reissued again and again and saved for posterity. I can't come up with other bad examples as I rarely read the original liner notes of old albums. Especially the Prestige liner notes seem to have been written in the same amount of time that the musicians had to record their album (one or two hours). The musicians are great improvisers, but most writers are not.

But you can always play the Quicktime movies manually from the subdirectories of the CD-ROM part, if you have Quicktime installed. Don't try to install the Quicktime program that's on the CD, it's 7 years old and completely outdated.

Sorry Peter, I oversaw the fact that you have a laptop. You can also upgrade your laptop hard drive, but those are a bit more expensive and you need to reinstall all your software and files, unless you have somebody who can "clone" your existing drive with the new drive outside the laptop. A drive with more than 32GB could create problems, as the Bios of 1996 computers have trouble recognizing them. There could even be a problem with >8GB drives. Check the Dell website for a bios update. USB is usually rather unreliable on pre-1998 computers, and with Windows 98. And USB 1.1 burners can only burn with 2x speed maximum.

You can't use a web-based storage service as a replacement for a local hard drive. What if the company that runs the server goes bankrupt (such things happen on the internet)? Your files will be lost. Get a CD burner AND a bigger hard drive. A CD burner alone won't do it because you will need 700MB free hard drive space to prepare the files you want to write on the CD. 2GB is definitely too small nowerdays. You can install a second drive in addition to the existing one. A 30GB drive (the smallest new drives now available) costs less that $100, and you will be able to use it in your next PC or install it into a USB enclosure ($70) and use it as an external drive. A hard drive alone won't be enough either, because it is too risky to keep all your files on a hard disk, which is the PC part that is the most likely to fail.

Yes Big Wheel, you are completely right, and most websites (such as allmusic.com) whose pictures are frequently used by music discussion boards are reasonable enough not to complain about it. But they could, as they have the law on their side. So it is better to remove the pictures from the threads if the copyright owner requests it. Even if Historic Golf Photos' complaint seems ridiculous because only one picture was displayed, it must be acknowledged that they dealt with it in an unbureaucratic manner. In Germany, some copyright owners don't hesitate to immediately send a formal warning letter ("Abmahnung") through a lawyer, who is then allowed to have his "costs" ($300-500) reimbursed by the person which receives the warning! And they do this also with private homepage owners who are not competitors or making money with other's images. As far as I understand it from the legal situation in Europe, mere links to pictures on other websites cannot constitute copyright infringement, so threads with images would be no problem if just the link is posted without IMG tags making the picture visible within the message. But this would be less fun of course.

I think "Star people", "Decoy" and "Amandla" are very good albums. They can't be compared with "Dingo" or "Siesta", which are not really Miles' projects. As far as post-comeback live albums are concerned, I prefer "We want Miles" to his later concert recordings, which tend to rely on the same few tunes ("Time after time" and so on). His post-1987 live recordings are overrepresented on official albums and bootlegs.

This new internet worm *should* not create problems for webservers (unlike previous worms), because it targets home computers (running Windows NT4, 2000 or XP) that have network ports 135 and 139 open to the internet. As far as I know linking (not copying) a limited number of photographies or articles from other websites does NOT constitute copyright infringment. Links can only be considered an act of unfair competition under specific circumstances, if done on a larger scae and if the two websites concerned are competitors. However, the legal sutuation is different if a photography/article is linked in a way that it is visible within the other website (for example by using of IMG tags in this message board, or by framing a page from another website). This has been considered copyright infringement by a german court. There are also ways for the board administrators to hide the board address from the webmasters, by routing direct links through public proxies. This requires a special add-on script for the board software.

Yes, the booklet of my CD (Made in Austria) says "Produced by Palle Mikkelborg" (also on the CD label) and "All songs written by Palle Mikkelborg". Mikkelborg writes: "Aura was composed when Miles Davis received the Sonning Music Prize in 1984. It is my tribute to him" But his name should also be on the cover, just like Gil Evans' name was on the covers of his albums with Miles.

Maybe the "problem" with Aura is that, although the music was written for Miles, it is essentially a Palle Mikkelborg album with Miles playing the trumpet part. The compositions have the same feeling as Mikkelborg's other projects, which mostly rely on written parts and don't have a lot of space for improvisation.

This series covers many facets of 20th century german (and austrian) classical music. The composers were discriminated more for their jewish origins or communist ideology than for the nature of their music. The most famous works are Zemlinsky's "Lyric Symphony" (if you like Mahler's "Lied von der Erde" you must have this), Krenek's symphonies and Korngold's violin concerto (very "Schmaltz", he later composed film music in Hollywood). Those discs are already sold out. The compositions are however available in other recordings.
