  1. I like these bits of Fantasy K2 slipcases on your hat, Marcus
  2. Yeah, you do scientific research on it
  3. Wasn't this motivated by the japanese "LP reproduction" ideology (including reproduction of previous errors)?
  4. What about this list, are these the Denon releases (or maybe repressings)? http://www.savoyjazz.com/sites/savoy/brows...Selection=title I agree that the Denon reissues sound great. Concerning the new reissues, I bought this 2003 "24bit remastered" version of Curtis Fuller "Blues-ette", and it is awfully maximised, with the bass sounding fat and distorted. I replaced it with a japanese reissue (not the Denon CD), which sounds very good.
  5. It's obvious that the british critics were so happy about their national piano treasure that they didn't ask questions. Especially the piano concerto recordings (originally made by the Vienna Philharmonic and the L.A. Philharmonic, in their halls) should have raised doubts.
  6. I have tried XP and Vista when they came out (the XP final version that was preinstalled on my notebook and the public beta of Vista), but nothing could convince me to switch from Windows 2000 to the newer versions. Under the hood, there is nothing really new, and the added functionalites (firewall, multimedia, etc) are all available as better add-on software from third party makers. I also don't like the standard desktop looks of XP and Vista. So I'm still running Windows 2000 on my latest computers. However, for the less knowledgable people who don't want to spend a lot of time adding software and optimizing the system, Vista is a good package. But it's overpriced, so I would not upgrade to it but wait until the computer needs to be replaced.
  7. I think the musicians that were copied will actually benefit from the scandal, because many of them were hardly known and their recordings will now be reevaluated and maybe reissued. Who knew László Simon's Liszt recordings (released by BIS in 1987), before they were stolen by Barrington-Coupe? http://www.bis.se/bis_pages/bis_news.php
  8. Thanks Flurin, Yes, I ordered some hatOLOGY discs, amongst other stuff.
  9. They seem to be getting slow. I placed an order on Feb. 22 (evening), immediately received the automatic confirmation, but still no information update on my order so far.
  10. I don't see a problem with that, it's been done for decades. I recently bought some Shostakovich symphonies recorded by Kurt Sanderling in the 70s for the east german state label. In a typically japanese fashion, these SACD reissues mention in detail the information writen on the tapes, concerning equipment used and the amount of time spent in the studio recording and cutting. I don't remember the exact figures, but cutting took more than 50 hours for one recording. You can imagine the number of take comparisions and cuts involved. But these are highly regarded recordings, and none of the cuts is noticeable. Most recordings with famous orchestras on the "major" labels are now actually recorded live, for economic reasons, usually in 2 or 3 evening performances in the same hall, and then the best (and least noisy) parts are cut together for CD release.
  11. Of course he had to release 100 CDs in 4 years to get his wife's talents finally recognized.
  12. The PDF catalogue (24MB zip file) can be downloaded here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/rx9l3a (the file link is below the Google ads) The link should be valid for 14 days at least.
  13. OK, I'll do it tomorrow. BTW, this is the page where the catalogue was available, but the download doesn't seem to work in the Internet Archive: http://web.archive.org/web/20040705013453/.../ORDERINFO.html
  14. I have the PDF file of the 2004 catalogue, which looks like the printed catalogue, with cover pictures etc. It's 25MB (zipped), so I can't email it, but I could upload it if I find a site that accepts it.
  15. Revenge of the fraudster pianist (Daily Mail)
  16. They have probably included all the Antibes footage that is publicly available, i.e which has been released previously on VHS or aired on TV. This DVD label works like the spanish CD labels, they don't have access to archives but take the material from public sources. Check if there is a masked TV station logo in the picture
  17. I received it today as well. The phishing intent is quite obvious. The user is informed that a payment has been made at his expense, and then follows a link to dispute the transaction. What I find sad is that some ebay sellers seem to sell email adresses to these scammers and to spammers. The mail was sent to my main email adres, which I only use with "serious" webstores and on Ebay.
  18. IIRC, it was generally in the line of "The commercial success is good for Blue Note, in that they can put more money into jazz reissues". There wasn't much enthousiasm for Norah Jones and her music.
  19. At least we're still important enough for Blue Note to continue the flow of RVG reissues.
  20. Hi, Are you aware that MFSL and DCC are not the same label?
  21. It's great these are finally being remastered ... The Cannonball was reissued by Fantasy on K2-remastered CD and SACD already, the Monk and Wes on K2 CD, and the Dorham was partially in the Sonny Rollins "Freelance Years" box.

Masters appear courtesy of Blue Note Records, a division of Capitol Records, Inc. Producer's note: Because much of the material used in this set consists of single sessions that produced entire LPs, we've decided, where possible, to retain the original album sequence within a session rather than present it in recorded order of performance. The studios sessions are presented in chronological order, followed by the live Lighthouse session, which occupies the two final discs. For the sake of repeated listenability, the already lengthy Discs Seven and Eight do not include the stage announcements or the audience singing "Happy Birthday" to Elvin Jones, which appeared on the original double LP issue. The out-of-phase sound on the drums on "Simone" (Disc Four, track three) is on the only surviving tape of this performance. The peak clipping of the bass drum at two points on "For All The Other Times" (Disc Four, track five) is in the original recording.
  24. That may be the main reason for many remasterings' crappy sound. Right, a lot of Pro Tools wizards and no experienced engineers. At least as far as pop/rock is concerned, it's often the artist or labels that want the remasters to sound that way (loud and bright), even if the engineer knows better.
