I don't see a problem with that, it's been done for decades. I recently bought some Shostakovich symphonies recorded by Kurt Sanderling in the 70s for the east german state label. In a typically japanese fashion, these SACD reissues mention in detail the information writen on the tapes, concerning equipment used and the amount of time spent in the studio recording and cutting. I don't remember the exact figures, but cutting took more than 50 hours for one recording. You can imagine the number of take comparisions and cuts involved. But these are highly regarded recordings, and none of the cuts is noticeable. Most recordings with famous orchestras on the "major" labels are now actually recorded live, for economic reasons, usually in 2 or 3 evening performances in the same hall, and then the best (and least noisy) parts are cut together for CD release.

Of course he had to release 100 CDs in 4 years to get his wife's talents finally recognized.

The PDF catalogue (24MB zip file) can be downloaded here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/rx9l3a (the file link is below the Google ads) The link should be valid for 14 days at least. -

OK, I'll do it tomorrow. BTW, this is the page where the catalogue was available, but the download doesn't seem to work in the Internet Archive: http://web.archive.org/web/20040705013453/.../ORDERINFO.html -

I have the PDF file of the 2004 catalogue, which looks like the printed catalogue, with cover pictures etc. It's 25MB (zipped), so I can't email it, but I could upload it if I find a site that accepts it. -

They have probably included all the Antibes footage that is publicly available, i.e which has been released previously on VHS or aired on TV. This DVD label works like the spanish CD labels, they don't have access to archives but take the material from public sources. Check if there is a masked TV station logo in the picture

Warning - New Phishing Expedition
Claude replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I received it today as well. The phishing intent is quite obvious. The user is informed that a payment has been made at his expense, and then follows a link to dispute the transaction. What I find sad is that some ebay sellers seem to sell email adresses to these scammers and to spammers. The mail was sent to my main email adres, which I only use with "serious" webstores and on Ebay. -
Let's Reopen Old Wounds!
Claude replied to JSngry's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
IIRC, it was generally in the line of "The commercial success is good for Blue Note, in that they can put more money into jazz reissues". There wasn't much enthousiasm for Norah Jones and her music. -

At least we're still important enough for Blue Note to continue the flow of RVG reissues. -

Hi, Are you aware that MFSL and DCC are not the same label? -
It's great these are finally being remastered ... The Cannonball was reissued by Fantasy on K2-remastered CD and SACD already, the Monk and Wes on K2 CD, and the Dorham was partially in the Sonny Rollins "Freelance Years" box.

Masters appear courtesy of Blue Note Records, a division of Capitol Records, Inc. Producer's note: Because much of the material used in this set consists of single sessions that produced entire LPs, we've decided, where possible, to retain the original album sequence within a session rather than present it in recorded order of performance. The studios sessions are presented in chronological order, followed by the live Lighthouse session, which occupies the two final discs. For the sake of repeated listenability, the already lengthy Discs Seven and Eight do not include the stage announcements or the audience singing "Happy Birthday" to Elvin Jones, which appeared on the original double LP issue. The out-of-phase sound on the drums on "Simone" (Disc Four, track three) is on the only surviving tape of this performance. The peak clipping of the bass drum at two points on "For All The Other Times" (Disc Four, track five) is in the original recording.

That may be the main reason for many remasterings' crappy sound. Right, a lot of Pro Tools wizards and no experienced engineers. At least as far as pop/rock is concerned, it's often the artist or labels that want the remasters to sound that way (loud and bright), even if the engineer knows better.

Thanks, I don't have toys at home, but I could hide money in some of my 4000 CDs' jewel cases My neighbour's appartment was burglared last year. She (an elderly woman) always keeps money at home. It was in an enveloppe on a desk. The burglar didn't take it, but he searched all the drawers of the desk. He also missed an expensive piece of jewelery that she had received the night before and that was lying open on table in a spare bedroom, whose door was open. The only thing he took was an old wedding ring of her parents, which had mainly emotional value and some very cheap jewelery. I never keep larger sums of money at home, but the idea of leaving a smaller sum for a burglar to go away quickly and not search the whole place seems like a good idea.

This quote attributed to Hatto now seems kind of ironic: http://www.musicweb-international.com/clas..._recordings.htm

Not really. "Thread crapping" is when somebody posts an opinion which is off-topic or suggests that the subject of the thread isn't worth discussing. So when someone opens a thread asking about the sound of a recording, and someone else answers that sound quality doesn't matter because the music is so great, that's "thread crapping", although the term may be too gross for what happened in this thread. BTW, we're still miles away from the discussions on the "other forum", where they are are comparing 43 different pressings of "Dark side of the moon" ...
-
I fully agree with that, as long as you don't write reviews in which you state that the new CD is the best sounding version. In that case you should have done comparisions beforehand, because some readers will rely on your judgement.
-
http://www.audaud.com/article.php?ArticleID=2458 Nice writing, but what does it say? I have the DCC version of this disc, and it doesn't sound muddy it all (nor does it sound bright). I've heard a few Prestige RVG editions, and some sounded too compressed indeed. Compression is something that some people with limited listening time or equipment often don't notice. It gets fatigueing in the long run. When it comes to the sound of reissues, I've found that commercial publications cannot be trusted. They ALWAYS prefer the newest editions. Maybe they cannot allow themselves to be critical about the sound, as their income depends on advertisement (notice that Audiophile Audition has a banner ad for the RVG series). When something's wrong with the sound, you'll have to read between the lines of the review to find it out. If a disc gets 3 stars for the sound (in a scale of 5), it means that it is unlistenable Audiophile Auditition has this typical american cheerleading reviewing style (which has now been taken over by the european hif press as well) which makes for entertaining reading, but is not useful as a buying guide (I know that hifi components should never be bought based on reviews alone). Every product gets a clear recommendation, it's only the degree of enthusiasm of the reviewer that varies. So every buyer of the product will be comforted in his purchasing decision. Jackie McLean - 4, 5, 6: http://www.audaud.com/article.php?ArticleID=2456 This album was previously (in 2001) reissued as a K2 remaster. A comparision between those 2 CDs would have been most useful. Sonny Rollins - Plus 4: http://www.audaud.com/article.php?ArticleID=2407 Better than the MFSL SACD? Reviewer John Henry at least tried to substantiate his claims with a listening comparision in his "Cookin'" review (but he was lacking the necessary editions of this session do do a proper A/B comparision): http://www.audaud.com/article.php?ArticleID=2392

I'll do my best I now use this link to do my shopping: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/aff_search.php

Jim, is there a referrer link for Amazon sites that can be clicked before doing a search on the Amazon site itself? Like with CD Universe. I´m currently buying lots of DVDs on Amazon.de and .co.uk , but I don't know how to search for them with the forum search mask, which seems to work with music items only. Or is it possible to do a random search to get the referrer credit and then switch to the movie search on the Amazon site? I would like to make Org benefit from these purchases, even if it takes a few more mouse clicks

I don't think any recording engineer recorded a session in a way to make it sound good on the playback equipment available at the time. What they did was change the sound during the mastering of the vinyl record. So the LP sounded different from the tape. Under these conditions, Hoffman is right to try to transfer the original recording tape to CD or LP as faithfully as possible, because the tape sounds closest to the actual recording, although it may differ from the sound that people can hear on the original pressings.
-
Depending on which OJC pressing you have, it may have been made from the same digital transfer used for the OJC CD and therefore include the same defects.
