Maybe it's my system. Miles and Wayne sound fine, Herbie a little less so, and Ron/Tony difficult to hear. But I don't have an SACD set, so it might be different.
I've gone back to the set this week in order to figure out why I rarely listen to it. What I've really noticed (and maybe I just have an inferior audio system) is that the bass and drums are deeply buried in the mix. So all the energy is sucked out of the performance and as a result it does sound like a lot of noodling between Miles and Wayne. Since Miles' trumpet is way up front, you can tell by the rough performance that he had been out of commission for a while with medical problems.
That's just my latest take. Others might disagree.😎
Tomorrow at SFJAZZ, Joe Henderson Lab. Should be great in that intimate space!
Mike Clark Quintet w/Eddie Henderson, Craig Handy, Patrice Rushen, Essiet Essiet
Not true. You still have some great Bert Jansch, and many of the songs are interesting. Not "just" folk songs. Try listening to the Live album (their last release)
I don't have the 7 disk box of original Pentangle albums, but I have the other 2. Through the Ages is great! The BBC box was a little disappointing in that some of the recordings aren't very good, but I'm glad I have it anyway.
All the original members are on Open the Door, except for Renbourn. Danny left after that.
Pretty sure I saw him once or twice with Richard Thompson. He had a VERY distinctive sound. Always enjoyed his presence on an album.
Pentangle WAS a unique band. Pentangle 2.0 (they didn't call themselves "2.0") was really good, too. They released about 6 albums in the 80s-90s. A little bit electric, but not in a bad way. And not intrusive.
