  1. Definitely see the Mingus BB. I saw them last year at Fez when I was in NYC. A lot of fun. I suppose it depends on who's playing when you see them, but I don't think they hire any duds. In the 70's I saw Don Ellis, Buddy Rich and a double bill of Maynard Ferguson and Woody Herman. In the 80's - Sun Ra (at New Orleans Jazz Fest) and also a performance of Mingus' "Epitaph" at Lincoln Center. More recently, I've seen Dave Holland's BB, the Mingus BB and coming up in a couple of weeks - Charles Tolliver's Big Band at the Jazz Standard in NYC.
  2. I wouldn't count on it. That's why it's up for auction.
  3. I'm waiting for THIS one.
  4. Less than two hours were needed for Cream, featuring Eric Clapton, to sell all the tickets this week for its first reunion in nearly four decades, four concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London in May. The top price was $236. Now some are being resold on the Internet for as much as $2,457, Agence France-Presse reported.
  5. He's pretty active, actually. Take a look at his recent output: All Music's Ginger Baker discography
  6. Maybe one of the reasons they are doing 4 nights is so they can assemble a DVD release of the best performances from each.
  7. That would be my worry if I was shelling out $500+ for a ticket. Also, I don't know what kind of stamina Jack has since his liver transplant a year and a half ago. I would think that the intensity of a full-on Cream concert would take a lot out of anyone.
  8. David, you didn't mention the OTHER bands (or the venue) on JC. Good ONES! BTW, I once heard an interview with Bill Graham where he described the first time that Cream played at the Fillmore. He said it was just astounding - the presence of the musicians, the VOLUME and the music. He was literally "blown away".
  9. Anyone lucky enough to be going to this? Concert of the decade, if you ask me ...
  10. Since most of those jokes seemed dated, I was thinking at the time that they might be Johnny's jokes. ... and they were. Not exactly a transcript, but a synopsis, anyway. The Wahoo Gazette
  11. If we're gonna have Blair, then we can have this, too:
  12. Wow. What a great job! Why would you WANT to work anywhere else?
  13. Up.......and I'll add Curtis Amy to my trade requests.
  14. You're in for a treat. There is TONS of great jazz there.
  15. I'm involved in compensation consulting. (yeah, I never heard of it myself until about 5 years ago). I used to do graphic "production". Which basically means a lot of PowerPoint reports and slide shows. Nothing too creative, that's for sure. In 2000 I got a freelance job in a small, fast-growing compensation consulting firm that specialized in high-tech. The owner managed to keep the business humming long enough to sell it out to a division of a mega-financial firm. I stayed on for the transition and managed to make a lateral move into the survey group. We take employee data from HR departments of (mostly) large companies and publish surveys about compensation. I currently lead the production of our Board of Directors Compensation and Corporate Governance survey.
  16. BMG now has this along with the other recent BN Connoisseurs... I ordered it today as part of the 60% off and free shipping deal. Eager to hear it! That's where I got it, actually.
  17. Monday on Letterman: - Senior Vice President of Worldwide Pants and Former Executive Producer of The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson, Peter Lassally - Former Bandleader of The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson, Doc Severinsen **Update** NY Times Letterman on Carson David Letterman has lined up several "Tonight" show alumni for his first new show since the death of Johnny Carson. CBS said yesterday that Mr. Letterman's guests on the "Late Show" on Monday at 11:30 p.m. Eastern time would include Doc Severinson, leader of the Tonight Show Band; Peter Lassally, Mr. Carson's executive producer and close friend; Ed Shaughnessy, who played drums on "Tonight"; and Tommy Newsom, who played saxophone and was often a target of Mr. Carson's on-camera ribbing. — JACQUES STEINBERG
  18. 19. I just picked up "Now!" which is MUCH more interesting than I was expecting. Great vocals, Harold Land is smokin' and even the (live!) LA Symphony tunes held my interest (I usually avoid strings when possible). Anyone else like this one?
  20. Giddins had a chat on JazzCorner today and mentioned this as an album that he's really looking forward to this year.
  21. In perfect condition - disks/booklet/box - #0866. Looking for one-to-one swap of these other Selects (must be similar condition): - Grachan Moncur - Randy Weston - Paul Chambers
  22. I was pretty happy to pick up a print of the Francis Wolff photo used on the "Newks Time" cover from Mosaic (on sale!) recently. It's an 8x10 image that's shows the entire sax and some of the surrounding studio (living room). That cover is cropped pretty tight.
  23. All Music gives that David S. Ware album ("Corridors & Parallels") a RAVE review. It's in my "Save for later" list as we speak. Thanks for the heads-up on that label.

    Bill Hardman

I'm assuming that's the same music that's on the Savoy album I have. Except mine's a 1986 reissue with a very uninspired (yet strangely psychedelic) cover.
