  1. I think Andy Bey KILLS on this set, actually. Worth it for him alone. But the whole thing is a lot of fun. But it's not a hard-bop set, which is probably what many Silver fans are disappointed by.
  2. The NL West should be pretty wild this year. - You've got the geriatric (but interesting) Giants - The "what's up with DePodesta's brain" Dodgers, that might be good (or crap) - The Pads are always threatening to do something. This year won't be any different. - As for the D-Backs & Rockies.......maybe NEXT year.
  3. Finally got this today. Very nice remastering by McMaster. It's great to have all this music on 2 CDs.
  4. Just got the first Santana album ("Legacy edition") and Horace Silver's "United States of Mind" for about $20, total. Both are 2CD sets.
  5. I think you pay $.99/tune for that priviledge. The "unlimited" plan lasts only as long as you subscribe. As I said, check the "fine print". I hope I'm wrong about this ... REALLY! BTW, there's an 'asterisk' at the bottom of the page that says this: *It is necessary to maintain a Napster subscription in order to continue access to songs downloaded through the Napster service.
  6. Nat Hentoff
  7. I believe that with Napster you don't really "own" the music. When you end your subscription, your music somehow becomes disabled. ** Read the fine print. Meanwhile, with eMusic - you download it, you own it!
  8. George Wein Norman Granz Max Gordon
  9. Good move, Conn. You won't regret it! B-)
  10. Sammy Davis, Jr.
  11. Yes he does!! That's the ONE!
  12. FWIW, Gerald does some fine arranging throughout Johnny Hartman's "Unforgettable" album on Impulse.
  13. Don't let the pop tunes put you off. As Rooster said, it's only about 10% of the set. The rest is top-shelf stuff. In fact, I've had this box for a couple of years and still haven't opened the seal on disk #5. I'm totally satisfied with #1-4.
  14. Just a few of the players: Charles Tolliver Harold Land Teddy Edwards Carmell Jones Bud Shank Mel Lewis
  15. You could pick up Gerald's recent "New York New Sound", which will give you a taste. He reprises a few of the tunes in the Mosaic set, as well - "Milestones", "Viva Tirado", "Blues for Yna Yna". BTW, if you're a member of eMusic, it's available there.
  16. Oh, yeah.....it's SMOKIN' alright!
  17. I saw this in an article today. I had been wondering what brought them together, as there hasn't been any other explaination up til now. I hope it's not true, but Jack did have a liver transplant about a year and a half ago. "Clapton, 59, is said to have agreed to the reunion because of the failing health of the other two members."
  18. Up. Just 2 weeks away!
  19. Definitely see the Mingus BB. I saw them last year at Fez when I was in NYC. A lot of fun. I suppose it depends on who's playing when you see them, but I don't think they hire any duds. In the 70's I saw Don Ellis, Buddy Rich and a double bill of Maynard Ferguson and Woody Herman. In the 80's - Sun Ra (at New Orleans Jazz Fest) and also a performance of Mingus' "Epitaph" at Lincoln Center. More recently, I've seen Dave Holland's BB, the Mingus BB and coming up in a couple of weeks - Charles Tolliver's Big Band at the Jazz Standard in NYC.
  20. I wouldn't count on it. That's why it's up for auction.
  21. I'm waiting for THIS one.
  22. Less than two hours were needed for Cream, featuring Eric Clapton, to sell all the tickets this week for its first reunion in nearly four decades, four concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London in May. The top price was $236. Now some are being resold on the Internet for as much as $2,457, Agence France-Presse reported.
  23. He's pretty active, actually. Take a look at his recent output: All Music's Ginger Baker discography
  24. Maybe one of the reasons they are doing 4 nights is so they can assemble a DVD release of the best performances from each.
  25. That would be my worry if I was shelling out $500+ for a ticket. Also, I don't know what kind of stamina Jack has since his liver transplant a year and a half ago. I would think that the intensity of a full-on Cream concert would take a lot out of anyone.
