Yep, David - that's the place! Great show!

This guy has a great BIG sound. Always brings something interesting to his appearances. I'm sure he's been on lots of albums, but he is definitely someone who deserves much wider recognition. I saw him last winter with McCoy, Hutcherson and DeJohnette. Quite a quartet and he was no small part of it. He was a great addition to the Tolliver groups of the 70's, too. Not many albums out under his name, but I've managed to grab a few. Right now I'm listening to "Compassion" (not available on CD, I don't think) which has a wonderful and moody title tune that takes up all of side 2. Filling out the sextet on this album are Joe Gardner, Chico Freeman, Dennis Moorman, Steve McCall and Don Moye. I also have on CD "Alternate Spaces" and "Unspoken". Grab 'em if you see 'em.

Speaking of Soderberg, I thought "The Limey" was one of the best films of the past several years. Definitely NOT a big hit, either.

The music was there!

I just recently started downloading the "Last Waltz" and "Consecration" boxes from EMusic. I gotta say, I was amazed at the strength of these sets (and I've only listened to the first 'disk' of each). I can't wait to hear the rest of them. Bill was really smokin' in the final days of his life.

I think the studio had a hard time marketing a sci-fi film that wasn't full of sfx and explosions. Having said that, I don't think you can compare the two films. They are very different in production, scope, intention and focus. I was glad to see an intelligent film - period.

They are different films, but I liked them both. I don't know why the new one was not well received. Too cerebral, no doubt.

I was discovering jazz in the 70's, too (17-27 for me). Some of my first albums were Freddie's "Red Clay" (still great), Charles Lloyd's "Wave" (sounding dated these days), Don Ellis "At Fillmore" (where's THIS reissue?) and "Live/Evil" ('nuff said). Joanne Brackeen's "Keyed In" is a nice TZ album, as well - Eddie Gomez/Jack DeJohnette. Good call FreeForAll on the big band stuff. I saw a Woody/Maynard double bill as well as Don Ellis' BB. I wish I had a better memory of those shows. ... and another for the Sons of Champlin!

- Let's not forget Joe Henderson, either. "In Japan" and "Relaxin' at Camarillo" aren't all bad. - Another Sarah Vaughan - "How Long Has This Been Going On" - Inner City record label. Some of their own stuff and they also licensed Steeplechase. - The Crusaders had some of their best years in the 70's. - Gary Bartz "Harlem Bush Music" albums and "I've Known Rivers" - McCoy Tyner was out of his mind in this decade.

Sure. There was tons of stuff. - Lots of Dexter. Besides "Tangerine", there was "Ca'Purange", "The Apartment", "Bouncing With Dex" and "Homecoming". - The first 2 "Return To Forever" albums. Also, "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy" was a pretty good fusion effort, I thought. - "Inner Mounting Flame" has to be mentioned. - The emergence of ECM Records. - Max Roach's quartet with Billy Harper and Cecil Bridgewater. - Mingus - both "Changes" albums and "Mingus Moves". - Cedar Walton's "Eastern Rebellion" group(s). ... well, that's for starters anyway.

BTW, the new Blackhawk box just gets better and better with each listening. Another astonishing "complete" set of mostly previously unissued material.

What's weird is that they sell the "remastered" original set for $27.98.
