There's also lots of great stuff that is STILL in print, too.
  3. I never listened to Pavement and didn't even realize who Stephen Malkmus was, but this new album got a rave review in todays SF Chronicle (Review). The fact that they compared it to Fairport Convention and Television in the same sentence really grabbed my interest. As AfrciaBrass sez, it is on EMusic, so I downloaded it and will give it a quality listen. If I like it, I will have to check out his other album and maybe some Pavement, too.
  4. I don't have any problem with IE on a PC. There will be a new interface soon anyway.
  5. Considering how closely this is related to the Carmell Jones set, I thought it might be good to have a thread for Gerald. I picked it up over a year ago and it still sounds fresh. A great introduction for people looking to get into Big Band as well as for 'experienced' listeners. I'm not saying that it's simple music, just a whole lot of fun.
  6. wesbed - You might be a candidate for the Gerald Wilson Mosaic set.
  7. Not exactly crazy, but it's the first time I have seen more action for Thad Jones than Sam Rivers. Thad just sold for $93 with 11 bids, and Sam for $86 with 5.
  8. You could always email Mosaic. They usually are very happy to answer questions.
  9. Re: splashy You'll know it when you hear it. I get the same type of sound from MP3s that are poorly sampled. They do mention "peak distortion" problems in th set. I wonder if this is what they mean.
  10. The tune "Brass Bag" just turned my head around. I had to replay it immediately. Check it out!!! ... BTW, anyone notice that the "E" session is 'splashy' sounding?
  11. Right - the seller is a member of the AAJ BBS and he was very up front about the status of this disk. Even he was amazed by the final price.

    Frank Strozier

There was a thread on the "old" BBS about Frank. I only just started listening to him and he rips some monster riffs, from what I've heard so far. Too bad he's so under-recorded. So far, I've got "Fantastic Frank Strozier", Roy Haynes "Cymbalism", Sam Jones "Down Home", Louis Hayes "Variety is the Spice" and "The Young Lions". Other suggestions?
  13. As AfricaBrass mentioned, EMusic has 4 High Note titles and also the Maybeck set. Try to find "Power Trio" from 1990. I believe it's OOP, but I see it in used stores quite often. With Elvin Jones and Cecil McBee, it's a WINNER. More great sideman work is on Pharaoh Sanders' "Journey to the One" and "Rejoice". Also two live albums - Betty Carter's "The Audience with B.C." and Charles Tolliver's "Grand Max".

    Hank Jones

Alan, thanks for the heads-up on the Japanese releases of those GJT disks. Interesting that they are all on back-order except for "Love For Sale" (which not surprisingly has 3 more tracks than the 12", 45 RPM version that I have.) I would have thought that this would be the most difficult to find.
  15. Anyone pick up Gary Bartz' "I've Known Rivers"? I've had the vinyl for years and always wondered why it wasn't on CD - now it is. Also, I don't understand why Fantasy/Milestone hasn't released the Harlem Bush Music albums "Uhuru" and "Taifa". They are available on one CD as an import.
  16. Yeah, randissimo, that's the same one. He's doing a show on the 27th with Stanley Cowell, Cecil McBee and Billy Drummond. It should KILL. It's billed as "Charles Tolliver and Music, Inc", BTW.

    Hank Jones

He's coming to the SF Jazz Fest soon and I keep meaning to pick up tickets. I think this is a must-see show. I may never get another chance to see him. No one has mentioned "The Great Jazz Trio". Some great music there - most often with Ron Carter and Tony Williams. I have four of them which are ALL good: "At The Village Vanguard" "Milestones" "Love For Sale" - a 45 RPM direct-to-disk set on East Wind with Buster Williams on bass "New Wine in Old Bottles" with the addition of Jackie McLean To my knowledge none of these have been released on CD. What's up with THAT?
  18. The Woodstock album is now a 4 CD set with lots of extra tunes and groups not originally in the movie or on CD. You can check it out at Tower Records
  19. Hey, you wanna discuss back problems? I've had 2 (count 'em - TWO) surgeries in the past year and a half. Now THAT sucks! ...hehehehehe...
  20. You can even download this from EMusic. The quality of the Fantasy MP3's over there aren't always first rate, though.
  21. Yep. I have a vinyl reissue set on Verve by Roy Eldridge called "Dale's Wail". The first disk features OP on organ. It's an interesting sound, not like you usually would expect. Recorded in 1952-53, it might have a lot to do with the "technology" of what an organ sounded like at the time. Good album anyway. I'm sure it's been released on CD in some form. Pick it up.
  22. Anyone seeing that Tolliver show. Give us a review! It's gonna be awesome.
  23. This is really a monster set. Totally out of the blue for me. Other than "Song For My Father", I didn't know anything about him. I acquired "Jay Hawk Talk" only recently and am now hooked. This is one of the finer Mosaic sets in recent memory. B)
  24. Yeah, that guy seems to be a jerk for sure, Chuck. But there's one (or more) in every crowd. I wouldn't let that keep you from posting over there - just ignore him. For the time being, I'm covering the gamut until I see what shakes out. I've been a member of JazzCorner for a long time - they are re-designing over there and will have a re-launch soon. Also, I will keep an eye on 'harlem.org' (still sleepy even with the new members), AAJ and here. I plan to keep checking in to the BN site, too. I think it still might be a good source for discussing BN topics. We'll just have to see what they do with it over the next few weeks. It's a mess right now.
