  1. Jack DeJohnette Special Edition ECM box
  2. Yeah ... the Criterion set is great! Jimi was outstanding of course with this mind blowing performance at the beginning of his career. Everyone's probably seen it by now, especially the guitar burning, but at the time he was single-handedly forging a sea change in rock. And you get his complete set in the box. I always liked the Airplane set and nice to see Quicksilver Messenger Service, too.
  3. For you streamers out there, there's a fair amount of Joe on Amazon and Tidal. Including Skateboard Park and the 2 BNs with Elvin's Trio.
  4. Agreed. For these types of multi-venue festivals paying up for a premier access pass is the only way to go. After many years of navigating SXSW, I learned that with "regular" passes it's too easy to get shut out of shows you most want to see. One nice thing about Big Ears (so far, anyway) is they cap sales so that hopefully it will never get too crowded.
  5. I picked that up last year. Good collection.
  6. Really! I was at the Montreux Jazz Fest in '78 and he was there promoting that as well as other Novus artists. I saw that show!
  7. Joe is always a good listen!
  8. Just recently got this. Great that these recordings exist!
  9. From Gerhard Richter’s Two candles (499-4) painting, 1982
  10. I saw that large AEC ensemble at Big Ears in March. Quite a show!
  11. I like Accelerate, too. But you could sort of tell they were running out of gas.
  12. "New Adventures In Hi-Fi" is one of my favorite REM albums, actually. And most of the IRS albums, of course. Millsey seems to be a nice guy. I spoke to him briefly at SXSW in 2008 and follow him on Twitter. Also seen him quite a bit since REM broke up, in the Baseball Project, other appearances with Steve Wynn and Big Star tributes. Regarding the Hot Rats box, I was really excited at first and then became skeptical when I saw the track listing full of alt-takes and so forth. But, having second thoughts (again) after reading this piece in the Guardian today. 'He was a musical warlock': reflecting on Frank Zappa's greatest album at 50
  13. Pretty much agree with everything here. I saw them 4 times in the 80s: 83, 85, 86, 87. And then a couple of times in 2008 at the end of their run. Like their albums or not, they always seemed to rise to the occasion Live. The Live at the Olympia (Dublin) set is especially good and covers most of their career.
  14. Never a huge fan of the album, but I did get the 2-disk version of this. Nice contrast to the original and new mastering.
  15. I think she did that here with the start time, too!

Cost-wise, I noticed that Amazon reduced the pre-order price about 25% soon after it was announced. Still a little pricey for a collection of alt-takes, though.
  17. ... or Hutcherson's name.
  18. I saw one of Duane's last performances. A free concert in the plaza at UC Santa Barbara on Oct 10, 1971.
  19. Yeah, the film is very good. Obviously a little sanitized from the actual experience (very few crowd scenes, lots of overdubs in the audio), but it seemed to capture the excitement that the performers brought to the show. I'll let you know about PT (not P-Tree). Looking forward to seeing Gavin especially. Madonna should be a trip! I heard it was vintage Madonna when she played here a couple of months ago. Don't bring your phone - she doesn't allow them inside. Los Lobos always bring a good show ... ALWAYS.
  20. I don't wanna brag (Yes I do!), but I went to the "actual" Last Waltz. Needless to say, an experience I'll never forget. Tomorrow night: Pineapple Thief w/Gavin Harrison on drums. Looking forward to it!!
