  1. Is this "non-jazz"? I can't decide ...
  2. I like that album, and it sounds fine to me. Now playing ...
  3. Looking forward to both!
  4. Two shows next week at SFJAZZ in the intimate Joe Henderson Lab. Should be intense! 1) Harriett Tubman: Brandon Ross guitar, banjo, vocals; Melvin Gibbs bass; J.T. Lewis drums 2) Zig-Zag Power Trio: Vernon Reid guitar; Melvin Gibbs bass; Will Calhoun drums
  5. Having never seen him, I plan on seeing at least one of his appearances. Hope fully more, but there's so much good music I'm sure there will be the usual juggling act with the schedule.
  6. I bet! I still have Big Ears to look forward to.
  7. If you only have one Spoon album, this is the one to get.
  8. Saw her with Kris Davis a few months back. REALLY good.
  9. I really wanted to go again this year, but couldn't make it. Maybe next year.
  10. The whole box is available for streaming on Amazon Music if you have Prime.
  11. I haven't heard all her albums, either. But I'm sure they're worth a listen.
  12. That IS an interesting tune! I've found Callier to be a real enigma. He does stuff like this, but also has that folk/jazz side, and Ordinary Joe is totally different from both.
  13. Absolutely! I haven't listened to her in a long time, but I heard this tune by Terry Callier this morning and she immediately came to mind.
  14. Been listening to Plant's Digging Deep podcast lately and his discussion about this album (and "Monkey" in particular) was pretty interesting. The whole series is worth a listen, actually.
  15. Wow - THAT'S something!
  16. 1,000% My favorite set of the year ... or MORE I went to his guitar camp at the Fur Peace Ranch in southern Ohio a couple of times. Fun experience and great to hang with him and Jack and whoever else is teaching that weekend. But it's not cheap, and getting there from SF is challenging. As much as i enjoyed it, I realized I could learn a lot more and for much less money here in SF. Still ... I might go again one of these days
  17. I picked up the Tolliver CD earlier this year from Mosaic. You might want to check their site.
  18. Pretty much agree here ... unfortunately. Two-three disks max would have been reasonable. Yep. I picked that up when it was released and hated it at first - sloppy! But the more I listened the better it seemed, especially the energy of the times. It's not Bless It's Pointed Little Head (one of the best live albums of its day), but a reasonable companion piece. FWIW, I had an opportunity to hang out with Jorma several years ago and asked him what he thought about Pointed Little Head and he said it was some if his favorite Airplane music.

I pretty much agree with this assessment. I don't have a problem with releasing this material, I just don't find it very interesting.
  20. I've always been a huge FZ fan and was planning on buying it. But I streamed it first and was very underwhelmed. Some interesting stuff for sure, but overall too many re-starts, rehearsal noodling and studio chatter to make it an enjoyable listening experience. I'm sure many will disagree.
