  1. Been listening to this singer lately. I really like what she does with her voice and her songs. This is how she describes herself, but I would say she's more like McRae than any of those others. Far too many new singers try to emulate Ella and Sarah, so it's nice to hear one who doesn't. [Singer Vanisha Gould was inspired by artists like Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Joni Mitchell, Carmen McRae and Ella Fitzgerald, she has successfully curated her own sound as a composer and band leader. Performing originals and music from the Great American Songbook on stages both in New York and overseas, she aspires to continue sharing her voice with audiences in New York and beyond.]
  2. Arrived today - that was FAST!
  3. Very sad. Was looking forward to seeing her at Big Ears: Susan Alcorn Septet
  4. She lived a "full" life, that's for sure! I was fortunate to see her in NY at the Bottom Line in 1987 with a very eclectic band of all-stars: Dr. John, Garth Hudson, Marvin Stamm, Fernando Saunders, Bill Frisell, J.T. Lewis. Below is a review of that show. Music: Marianne Faithfull Returns (Published 1987)
  5. Wow - great shot, too!
  6. Unique landscape, for SURE. I was only there once, over 10 years ago, but I remember it was REALLY HOT.
  7. Agreed. The live setting helps, too.
  8. I have "Night of..." on both OG vinyl and 32Jazz CD reissue. A personal fav, for sure. Strata-East is about to start reissuing some of the classics, and I believe new artist releases, too.
  9. One of their most intense albums yet. Very tight at focused. I was really surprised. I thought the last live one (Tilburg) was kind of inconsistent.
  10. Been catching up with the JJ Johnson box, in light of his recent birthday. LOTS of music in there!
  11. I believe it! As far as Woody's Muse albums, I snapped up "The Complete Muse Sessions" Mosaic box as soon as it was available. The median on that is now $200 - and those are CDs.
  12. Tim had a "listening party" on Bandcamp for this album today. Sounds pretty great. The 2-disk CD is a limited edition -worth getting.
  13. They sponsored a "listening party" on Bandcamp today, so I bought the album online. Sounds great!

    Garth Hudson RIP

My memory of Garth is seeing Marianne Faithfull at the Bottom Line in 1987 with an all-star band of: Dr. John, Garth Hudson, Marvin Stamm, Fernando Saunders, Bill Frisell and J.T. Lewis
  15. Muse CDs seem to be reasonably priced. Vinyl can be much more (Median Discogs $): Clifford Jordan "Night of the Mark VII" $100, Woody Shaw "Moontrane" $96, Joe Chambers "Double Exposure" (w/Larry Young) $50. Quite a few others in my collection, less than $25.
  16. Sounds similar to the NY show. As far as energy, I didn't specifically Tolliver's playing - there's no way he could still play like years past. More that the whole show was a little up and down. There were some fine moments for sure, but then it veered off at other times. This was the second set of the night, so maybe that had something to do with it. Disappointed that McBee and Cables didn't show up in the second set - but again, I'm sure age had something to do with that.
  17. Ravi's show turned out to be a more exciting set than the S-E show. I was surprised - not that Ravi wouldn't be good, but that Tolliver's show was a little sloppy and never really brought the energy I was expecting. Here's Ravi w/Jeff "Tain" Watts, David Virelles and Dezron Douglas
  18. I have that box, too. Great stuff. Plus most of the Tolliver albums. Here's another one of Tolliver at the NYC Winter JazzFest w/Camille Thurman, Aaron Johnson, Darrell Green, Christian McBride
  19. Sounds probable. I can't think of any other reason that stuff is getting moldy in a vault somewhere.
  20. How about the ENTIRE Muse Catalog! I don't understand how all of that great music can remain OOP for so long. Especially with the rise of remastered classic albums on vinyl.
  21. Can't wait for Monday's Strata-East show! Also going to Ravi's Love Supreme interpretation on Sunday with loads of guests. Should be wild.
  22. Pentangle "2.0", but still a very good album
