What live music are you going to see tonight?
BFrank replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Tomorrow at SFJAZZ, Joe Henderson Lab. Should be great in that intimate space! Mike Clark Quintet w/Eddie Henderson, Craig Handy, Patrice Rushen, Essiet Essiet -
Oh ... OK then! 😎

I'm surprised they're re-releasing it on CD. I don't think it's been OOP for very long. Seems like something that would be for vinyl collectors.

Not true. You still have some great Bert Jansch, and many of the songs are interesting. Not "just" folk songs. Try listening to the Live album (their last release)

What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

50th Anniversary box -
I don't have the 7 disk box of original Pentangle albums, but I have the other 2. Through the Ages is great! The BBC box was a little disappointing in that some of the recordings aren't very good, but I'm glad I have it anyway. All the original members are on Open the Door, except for Renbourn. Danny left after that.

Pretty sure I saw him once or twice with Richard Thompson. He had a VERY distinctive sound. Always enjoyed his presence on an album. Pentangle WAS a unique band. Pentangle 2.0 (they didn't call themselves "2.0") was really good, too. They released about 6 albums in the 80s-90s. A little bit electric, but not in a bad way. And not intrusive.

Just stumbled on this when looking up Ricky Ford albums. Interesting because Mark Soskin was also the piano player with Sonny and Jerome at that Montreux gig. I'm a big fan of hers. Have seen her with Vijay Iyer and Tyshawn Sorey a number of times. Who's in the Quintet? -

I bet that was good. Never seen Ricky or Barker before. Here's Jerome w/Sonny at Montreux Jazz 1978 -

Saw Altschul's Axiom 5 group (John Irabagon, Uri Caine, Mark Helias) at Big Ears this year. An excellent set! -
Do you have the "Baggy's Rehearsal Sessions" on Dagger Records? It's literally the rehearsal tracks leading up to the Fillmore shows. They're very loose and the guys are obviously having a lot of fun. But the sound is good and there's some good material.

That Band of Gypsys "Songs for Groovy Children" Fillmore box set is astounding. Parts of those 4 shows have been released at least 3 times already. But can't you really experience (no pun intended) the sense of adventure and creativity that Jimi and the band laid down until you hear the entire 2 nights.

I've always been a huge Jimi fan and have bought most of the major releases, collections and re-releases and many of the minor ones too. But I'm on the fence about this one. It's obviously one of his iconic albums, but I just don't think I need another collection of studio outtakes, false starts, and alternate versions. I would think that anything worthwhile or unusual from the vault has been released already. Look forward to hearing your reviews when it's released.
