Yeah, unfortunately I've gotten real used to that. If it makes you feel better, I can relate to your reasons!

I think the Hollywood Sessions are a bit too laid back, which works to their disadvantage. I think's Art's performances here, generally (certainly not all) are a bit diluted. Art seemed to play best under pressure, whether external or internal. The other musicians strike me as a bit too easy as well. BTW, couldn't resist, just picked up the LP version of "Blues for the Fisherman." I like Art on vinyl.

Sidestepping the points Shawn makes, there's the mastering which in my opinion has been in the previous three volumes excellent enough to just forget other versions, and the fact that these are presented as copies of the original lps in track listing and packaging. For some of us, this was the way we first heard the music (in my case in the 'seventies) and it can be the way we'd like to experience them now. (I really enjoy that now.) OK, I can understand that, I guess. I didn't have any issues with the Impulse CDs, and personally like having the alternate tracks available. I did check out the Amazon reader reviews (FWIW! ); seems the first volume got raves for its remastering, while 2 and 3 (especially 3) got panned. I mostly listen to these on vinyl anyway

Somebody explain to me the appeal of this set please. Haven't all of these titles been released before in a myriad of forms from their initial release? What am I missing here that would want to make me shell out $65 to own yet another reissue?

I think the ones you get from the BASTIDS are all CD-Rs from the Bill Harper Fan Club. I ordered a bunch of Harper CDs a year or so ago from them, and I think they are all CD-Rs. My copy of CAPRA BLACK, for example, is stamped Strata East, SECD 9019, but also is stamped with the name and address of the fan club. If the original issue means something to you, expect to hunt longer and pay more. Edited because I just checked the BASTIDS web site and while they identify the titls as from the Billy Harper Fan Club, thy list them as CDs, not CD-Rs. Hmmm.

THE STARTING GATE: Stan Getz. BYG. Performances from 1946 and 1949. A couple of the bassists are unknown to me: Iggy Shevak (gotta love that name), and Mert Oliver. Anyone know anything about these guys?

Thad Jones- Pepper Adams Quintet, with Duke Pearson, Ron Carter, Mel Lewis. Very hip.

Down Beat Polls archives
Leeway replied to brownie's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I'm not saying the others are bad, but, c'mon, NONAAH is one for the ages. With the exception of the Ornette album, the others are not in the same league. Time has a way of sorting things out. -
Down Beat Record Reviews
Leeway replied to colllin's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
There was a time when a Downbeat review meant something; that was a long time ago. I do enjoy the old issues. The current generation of jazz mags are so corrupted with PR flackery and timid musical tastes that, aft many years, I finally dropped my subscriptions in frustration. Jazz Times was/is simply dreadful. I don't miss either magazine at all. And there is less to take to the recycle bin -
I like Lol. Once saw him play a solo concert in a student cafeteria filled with dozens of candles. I think there were about six of us in the audience. Another time with a band playing straight bebop (much better attended!). One of the least commercial musicians I've come across. Frequrntly just stops mid performance because he's run out of ideas or got bored and just starts something else. Missed this tour though: http://www.theshed.co.uk/guardian-skip This is a great survey of his music from 1954-99: Amazing! Sometimes you do wonder if Lol really does stand for "laugh out loud." What I love about his playing is its humaneness. Its always engaging on a personal level.

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
Leeway replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
This box set is quite well done. I finally found a copy of Moondoc's "Revolt of the Negro Lawn Jockeys." Great stuff. -
The laws of physics say that for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction. The law of conservation of matter says that matter is not destroyed, only transformed. These reflections arise from RELYLES wholesale importation of ejp 626's wholesale export of CDs. Go RELYLES, I stand in admiration! (you got some good stuff!)

I have the vinyl, but I'll buy the CD reissue when it arrives. I like the fact that the full session will be pulled together. First, the Dixon reissue and now this! A great year for reissues.

It is pretty much already broke down. These problems are evidence that the CD transport and/or laser are on the fritzz. They can be fixed, as I have done in the past. Usual price is from $75-$125 depending on model, dealer, etc. Worth it if it's a good CD player and you like it.

Opinions sought regarding Clare Fischer - Thesaurus
Leeway replied to GA Russell's topic in Recommendations
I sold off my CF albums. I found them dull. I don't regret moving them along. -
LF: Steve Lacy - Scratching the Seventies
Leeway replied to Face of the Bass's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I'm sure it OOP. I picked up my copy on a visit to Amoeba in Los Angeles, $35. I was thrilled. You might check with them (L.A. or San Francisco). -
Interesting. I like his term, "re-creative musicians." Thanks.

Roscoe is a genius. Let me repeat that: Roscoe is a genius.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
Leeway replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Sunday am going to see Trevor Watts with Veryan Weston in Baltimore. I've been looking forward to this show. -
I'm ambivalent about these awards. Yes, it is nice to give these artists acclaim. OTOH,the awards make jazz something of a museum piece. Jazz is now part of the establishment. Once an art is given official sanction, one can be pretty sure that it is not longer vital.

That''s not a bad thing all the time. I think this is what makes DuPre's performances compelling.
