Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters... RELEASED!
Matthew replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Received my copy today, and I must say, I love this cd. Has a nice, tight sound, and it's obvious that a lot of creativity went into Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters... Put me down on the I love "Life Wish" side, had a great vibe to it, Joe Gloss does great things on this cut. Marsh is also outstanding, keeping everyone in line. I'll be spending a lot of time listening to this over the next couple days, along with my other fav of the moment... The Dropper . Congratulations to Jim, Joe, and Randy for a fantastic first effort. -
John Patton Mosaic Select: What's in, What's Out?
Matthew replied to Matthew's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Last two e-mails I sent Mosaic went unanswered. Not too happy about that since I've bought 25 Mosaics. -
O.K., I'm getting older and have C.R.S. (Can't Remember Stuff ) -- So what's in the Mosaic Select that's coming out, and other than what's in the Select, what do I need to get to have all is BN stuff? I saw a bunch of his stuff Friday doing some cd hunting, but I couldn't pull the triger because I didn't want to duplicate blah, blah, blah. PS: Is "Blue John" worth picking up. I'm not a big fan of George Braith, in fact, I got rid of his doubletime BN release. There seems to be two different reviews for AMG. My third edition and what's on the webiste do not agree on it's worth.

I don't know who is releasing them, but some Argo dates are out in lp form. Saw Vito's lp at Amoeba's, and I've seen both lp's of "Baby Face" Willette also. List price $9.99.

In honor of Bix's 100 birthday, I'm in the process of going through all 4 volumes of "Bix Restored." Some of the music is REALLY an aquired taste.

Two I listened to this evening get major kudos. Here 'Tis and Fred Jackson's Hootin' and Tootin' are as greezy as you're going to get. Willette and Green make a great team, but Grant Green, in my book, is the guitar player for organ players, he never wastes a note.

Walking through Amoeba (Ameoba?) Records this morning, I came across a lp copy of "Presenting The Three Sounds", and decided, "What the heck? I've never heard them, I'll give it a shot". I went home, put it on, and darn, these guys are great! Harris plays in a great, funky style, and the whole trio is as tight as anything I've heard. The sound RVG got from the band was amazing (it was a bl/w Liberty pressing). Downside: I'm going to have to buy more Three Sounds, as it seems a Mosaic is out for the picture.

My favorite is "Two Days In April" with Fred Anderson & Edward "Kidd" Jordon. I've said this before, bt this cd is like listening to the history of the tenor saxaphone, and it is intense as anything you'll ever hear. Plus! Wiliam Parker and Hamid Drake are backing, so there is something going on every second.

I saw a sealed lp of James Newton's "African Flower" for $7.00, and I said, "Nah! I'll buy it next week." Well, you know how the story ends.

looking for Miles/MMW "live" streaming site...

Yes, Darkfunk was the place you're thinking about. Great downloads of very rare Miles stuff. You need to get on their mailing list. They e-mail links to concerts, in fact, they had a couple go out just last week and I think Herbie Hancock was one of them, Miles, etc. My computer crashed over the weekend, and I lost everything. -
I think he's trying to get France to change their vote to SACD's.

Jailhouse Sugar Bailey. Not too bad, I must be Derek Bailey's brother he never mentions in interviews.

I get what people are saying though about "the power of prayer". I'm always reminded of Primo Levi's experience in WW II, and his reaction to someone praying to God that they won't get "exterminated", the hatred and anger is over powering. -
Dude, now you got me -- all this time I thuoght it was Woody Shaw. But WY?

That ain't cool at all for a mod. I can make an ass out of myself on my own.

Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters... RELEASED!
Matthew replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Just received word that my copy is being shipped today. Can't wait to hear this cd. -
I have volume I of the Complete Nocturne Recordings, and there was a rumor that a vol. II was going to see the light of day. Anyone have any info on a volume II?

I still think the best organ/bigband record is the Gerald Wilson and Richard Holmes record You Better Believe It on Pacific Jazz -- it's also on disk #1 in the Wilson Mosaic. Wilson was able to incorporate Holmes very nicely into that great big band of his, and what cuts! "Blues For Yna Yna", "The Wailer", "Straight Up and Down", just some classy, funky, fun going on. I just think Wilson was able to do a much better job then Oliver Nelson with Jimmy Smith, (and I love Nelson too) getting the organ in the big band mix. So, what are your fav Big Band/Organ records.

I had bookmarked a great "Pacific Jazz" thread that really helped the past couple of month because I'm focusing on buying PJ lps, and drat! I never saved it in "MSWord" form. Lost for good.

I'm just down after this whole BNBB experience. There were only two Boards I ever posted on, one was Jim Rome's "The Jungle", mostly in the Baseball Forum, I even used "Bluenote" as my name -- that shut down. Then there was the BNBB -- and now that shut down. Granted, I was not a major league poster, in 3+ years, I posted 788 times, but BNBB really helped me to learn about jazz in my daily visits from people who loved the music. Plus, I'm in an enviornment where there is no other jazz fans I know, so it kept me connected to jazz things. Hopefully this place will grow in the coming months and became a great place to hang out.

P.S. -- I'll have to retire JuJu for good now.

I never understood the extreme reaction that Blue Note had last week. I refuse to believe that it had anything to do with Norah Jones, or Politics, or even cdr's. I'm at a loss, maybe I just don't understand the mindset that went into the reaction, I mean, the flamewars on sportsboards are far worse than anything on the BNBB. So, who knows.

For whom the bell tolls it tolls for the BNBB
Matthew replied to Soul Stream's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well, Blue Note did the right thing on this, they had so screwed things up they needed just to shut down and start over again. Well, it was truly fun for three years of daily visits, I learned tons about jazz. Too bad Blue Note never realized what they had in the board. Never to be JuJu again. -
Those really bright headlights on cars...
Matthew replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Damn! You guys are NUTS! Here in L.A., we NEVER get out of our cars to confront someone, 'cause you don't know what's in their glove compartment. Live to drive another day, that's the only way. -
All depends on your price range. I have Dynaudio 52's on my rig, which cost $800.00, and they have a great sound to them. Very good detail. So, in terms of speakers, buy the best you can, and build around them.
