Oh, and as for kinda boring... I'd say kinda not exciting. There are places to drink and dance. And listen to jazz. But it's not New York or even London. So, if you don't like beautiful women...

Memories of Stockholm: Winter: Cold. Summer: Almost as cold. Winter: Dark Summer: "Would someone please turn out the lights?" All year: "You want How much for a slice of pizza? No, not the whole pizza... Uh huh. I see." I stayed in a boatel (boat/hotel). It was all I could afford. I liked Norway too. Oslo, Bergen, and many small cities. Don't fight it. Go with the floe.

unique and uncommon first names in jazz
Dig'Em replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
http://britam.org/genealogy/Hebrew-Names.html ORNAH is, like, an anagram for NORAH. And if ORNAH is Cedar Tree, then NORAH and CEDAR Walton are, like, kinfolk. Damn. -

Dig'Em replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
What the hell kinda name is Norah? Seriously, I kinda like Eubie. I guess Wardell isn't terribly uncommon...of course that wasn't Gray's given first name anyway. Bummer to learn that "Miff" was really "Irving", Mugsy just "Joseph" and "Turk" an uninsipred "Melvin". Undoubtedly, jazz needs more Dweezils and Moon Units. -
What Kind Of Cough Is Serious? Coffin.

what are you drinking right now?
Dig'Em replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Hey is that in a styrofoam cup. But of course! Nothing better than Essence of Carcinogenic Microwaved Styrofoam with the Sysco (?) coffee-by-the-vat. -

36-hour old, decaf, cafeteria coffee, reheated in a microwave. Can I pour you a cup? -
One other consideration. Do you envision yourself using a turntable? If so, you may want to consider an integrated device with the 'phono' input - MC or MM or both. You can always add an external step-up later, but you mention 'budget'...

Hi, I'm new here. This thread looked pretty inviting. But I guess I was wrong. I'm going back to the friendly folk at AAJ. "Where seldom in heard, a discouraging word..."

My favorite Mann - by far - is Bebop Synthesis/Yardbird Suite. He even plays tenor. The write-up from AllMusic is pretty right-on in my estimation. Excellent stuff. -------------------------- Originally released in 1957 as Yardbird Suite, this is a great album capturing Herbie Mann in his pre-commercial success days, and featuring a 26-year old Phil Woods on alto sax. Also featured are guitarist Joe Puma and vibist Eddie Costa. If anyone were to ask for proof that Herbie Mann could play straight-ahead bop, this recording would be a good place to start. The thing that really sets this album apart from other Mann outings is his Lester Young-influenced tenor sax playing on two of the tracks. He proves to be a solid improviser on that instrument. But the best solos may belong to Woods who was really cooking on this session, displaying the Birdisms upon which he would build his reputation as a giant of the alto for decades to come. Mann himself was in top-notch form as well, and this recording has stood the test of time as one of his best.

Yesterday (Saturday January 13), I understand, in Oakland.

Do you have a mono/stereo switcher on your amp/preamp?
Dig'Em replied to porcy62's topic in Audio Talk
Mono stereo and, best yet, reverse. And I use this switch often. -
My point wasn't that Oakland or Jack London Square area are scary, just not on visitors' 'radar screens'. How many people visit "New York" and never leave Manhattan? Or think that New York IS Manhattan. San Francisco has lots of diversions. Hard core jazz enthusiasts will certainly be willing to make the trek (as they do to Amoeba), but a fair portion of Yoshi's clientele seems to be business travelers with expense accounts looking for a pleasant evening (perhaps including dinner) with a client or spouse substitute.

I'm about 87% sure I've got that first LP. Can't remember a damn thing about it. Will have to try to remember to pull it out this weekend. Sounds like I enjoyed Porter's autobio a bit (but only a bit) more than Marcello. I suppose I enjoyed the war stories and was more able to overlook some of the grandstanding and emphasis on his few 'hits' and later years.

Then again, I should probably keep my mouth shut: I'm no Bay Area expert.
-
I wouldn't be surprised is it cannibalizes a little. But I think there are plenty of people in SF (tourists, business travelers) who simply wouldn't/don't go to Oakland. There are probably some East Bay people willing to cross the bridge for a concert; they'll be the cannibalizers, I suppose. But with careful booking, this might be avoided. Don't book a couple of veteran hard boppers against each other. Book some jazz-lite type in SF when Cedar Walton's in Oakland.

I'm not a Yoshi's fan, but obviously some folks are. And so, the latest news on SF Location (I hadn't seen a date before I saw this article): DAILY DATEBOOK With major venue set to open in S.F., the year looks promising for jazz Daniel King 10 January 2007 The San Francisco Chronicle © 2007 Hearst Communications Inc., Hearst Newspapers Division. Provided by ProQuest Information and Learning. All Rights Reserved. It's tough to know exactly when jazz highlights will pop up in the Bay Area, in part because the big arrivals and hot tickets tend to be last-minute bookings. Unlike rock and classical performers, jazz musicians don't normally book months in advance. So consider this roundup a basic sketch of Bay Area jazz '07 -- whom to stalk, where to look and when to buy tickets. The talker so far? Yoshi's in San Francisco. Come July, the Oakland presenter's second active stage -- its first outside the East Bay -- will have legs. Whether Yoshi's 2.0 will fit in depends on the club's outreach to local musicians, out-of-towners' contracts with the festivals, whispers between bandleaders and, yes, the economic viability of jazz's brush with hip-hop. Place your bets.

The LPs are, uh, pretty hard listening - lo-fi with quite a bit of distracting noise - including, as I recall, some guy in the audience yelling "Go Wardell"). The music is something short of great - not Bird's or Bones' greatest night, but there aren't many chances to hear them together. I put it on when I can tolerate the shortcomings.

The most bizarre place you bought Jazz in

Incidentally, I think the Blakey is on red or yellow vinyl. (It's presently 6000 miles away.) -
The most bizarre place you bought Jazz in
Dig'Em replied to White Lightning's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I picked up an LP of Art Blakey ('Hold On, I'm Coming' or some such thing) from a guy pushing a cart in Tajikistan. Also bought a 'souvenir' copy of some Louis Armstrong (notes in Cyrillic) from a Siberian flea market...along with some old Russian Army medals. Finally, bought a jazz 'comp' CD (obvious bootleg) on the streets of Hanoi, circa 1985. -

Benny Goodman Capitol Small Group Mosaic
Dig'Em replied to David Ayers's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
IMHO, most of the best of this material is collected on... http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:j05gtq4znu42 Benny Goodman, Undercurrent Blues. This may now be out of print, but still readily available. Snatch it up. And it's got some rare/unissued material.
