  1. Pass preamp would distroy this. Tube are better in the 3D thing but that is about it.
  2. Ive been using three pairs of vintage amperex tubes interchangably which are the same type and manufactured within the space of 5 years. In my preamp. Each pair sounds significantly different. How can any serious audiophile move his system ahead when such variances are introduced just by changing tubes even when they are from the same manufacturer and era? Listeners who want to hear whats there should seek out the best solid state and improve their front end to get what they want. Tubes are a excercise in listening to different types of harmonic distortion and frequency variations. For example , you could take a dozen average solid state amps and preamps, listen to some Beatle recordings and you would know exactly what each Beatles voice sounds like. You could then listen to high end tube gear, and never quite be sure what anyone sounds like since you would hear a slightly different vocal timbre with each piece of gear and which each change of tube. No wonder pro's rely on solid state!
  3. Not yet but tubes are rediculous. Solid state can do anything that tubes do. Except add distortion.
  4. this album stinks. don't buy it!
  5. that would be just too radical!
  6. Well I'll be anxious to hear that combo.
  7. can you find out what he paid for it? I sold one back in the 80's. actually it was a 8014 but whats a few extra channels? tell him to run Dolby otherwise the eq's are grainy if you run any real level.
  8. Now I would pay 1,000 dollars for a 60's pressing of Back To the Tracks!
  9. is this on vinyl? I rue the day John McLaughlin leaves this planet. There will be black hole in the music world.
  10. I attempted to buy a pair of tubes off this guy off EBAY. After sending me a single tube he attempted a bait and switch I guess hoping I would take anything. He didn't even send me those tubes! When I told him I was going to file a complaint with PayPal unless he sent me what I paid for he sent me abusive emails telling me he was not sending me any tubes cause I had "mouthed off"! And he would blacklist me with all the tube dealers he knew. Fortunately I bought PayPals satisfaction guarantee which was a couple of bucks so I am not out the money. I have also found thru Audio Asylum others who have been ripped off by this guy. Some advice for any yuds at there. If you find yourself dealing with a person who is the least bit evasive and who gives you pause; run like the hills! There is always another person to do business with. Never put up with any bullshit no matter how much you need the item, cause you will wind up being ripped off. And never let a swindler get over on you! that is my New Years Resolution.
  11. Yeah, it's cool, but the music is so stiff rhythmically ... my sentiments exactly!
  12. Collector I know bought it. Temporary insanity is only explanation. EBAY protection only goes up to 175. still a bad gamble.
  13. Reminded of another West Coast musician, Russ Freeman who left music business to become choreographer. He said there were to many ups and downs to deal with. (working with Chet Baker probably had something to do with it.)
  14. the new jersey pressings sound fatter and a little compressed compared t0 the New york versions. I have noticed this pretty consistantly. I like the New York cause they sound more natural like the early Contemporary records. Lots of air.
  15. the pressings do sound different also.
  16. his web site has some interesting cds not often found in the stores. angel Heart which some consider too commercial is an interesting document of the LA sound at its zenith with many great studio musicians and recorded by Bill Schnee.
  17. original flat edge Jutta Hipp at Hickory House for 2 dollars in vg condition.
  18. their cables stink.
  19. some good vinyl at attractive prices. ending is a few minutes. search for seller "jazzhound".
  20. on sale at tower records online
  21. I guess what I am hearing is the leakage into the other mics like on Miles in the Sky album. This is missing is today's recordings with more isolation. Most engineers I have worked with wanted me to play louder that I do in live situations. I generally found the harder I hit the drums, the better the drum sound. I remember one jerk kept telling me to hit harder and harder... meanwhile he had the drums going thru compressors! Then he missed getting one of the best takes I ever did. Anyone know where the discussion with Jim about studio equipment purchasing is? Was it on the Blue Note board..It related to a ProTools set up. I think it was for a school studio. I may be getting back into the studio business
  22. The "can't hear the forest cause of the trees" sound on drums created by close miking techniques. there aren't too many records where the listener gets a "picture" of the drum set such as on Miles 60's records or Led Zep. It seems that backing off the mics get a more dynamic sound also. It isn't easy but it seem like most engineers and producers have just given up on getting this on tape.
  23. Mono copy Maiden Voyage... now at 275.. anthony pearson scores again!!
  24. I'm not too keen on the sound of the cd box set so am thinking about buying the lp set. Even though I have the originals, I think they could have been better soundwise. The alternate take of Milestones is better than the original to my ears. It would be nice to have this stuff all together but I have been disappointed in the past with Mosaic lps. Anyone have an opinion?
