No. The whole thing was a waste of money. We never got one single gig or review or festival or anything out of the whole deal. Nothing. Spent well over $300 applying for various things, too. If you want an EPK that you can mail out to people via a link, it isn't hard to create one on your own website. But frankly to me, that's what a band's website is anyway, isn't it? Just a big EPK. Getting gigs is all about building personal relationships. Sonicbids is the anti-thesis to that. Jim, a EPK is most useful after you've got yhe gig for press purposes. Mailing of a physical cd and a follow up call is best, but that's hard to do for Europe! I suggest send some cds out for airplay to select radio stations (in Europe) as a start. You may want to convert your albums to a higher resolution file, zip the file and send them via the internet. Many overseas radio stations will be willing to accecpt them that way, along with a PDF of the artwork and liners. A lot of this advertising/EPK?music distribution is going to change soon with hi res, bundeled content that you'll be able to send to venues. One bundle with DVD quality video, Hi res music files, realtime connection to Organissimo and or bolgs, high quality live shows etc, that can help show what you can do.

That's well said HP, and while I can understand (by just a hint) what Clem is getting at, I'd rather hear Mr. Flanagan on a piano missing a few keys than Russ Freeman, anyday. A huge thumbs up for Carl "Grooveyard" Perkins, by the way! ( I've guess youve heard Phineas do Grooveyard, Clem) For Ellington, I love "The Queen Suite" (and Flanagan does a great "Sunset and the Mockingbird") and "Paris Concert", just to name two. I once heard Stan Getz do "Lush Life" in a hotel lounge filled with mid week ,drunk traveling salesmen, that was so emotional he almost came down off the stage and challenge one to a fight. It was great. Great band with another one for Clem's list: Albert Daley.

I just got one too.

EPKs are always a good idea if they are done right, but you'd be surprised by how many venues don't know how to use them, or don't use them at all. The use of Hi-Res photos, mp3's, links to reviews and videos should be at least a part of them. I'm pushimg for more active content to be a part of them. Here's Joe Locke's: Press/Media

I bet JazzTimes knows nothing about it. If I read this right, this company will submit your music to Jazz Times and also provide a EPK to them and others for a fee? You can do this yourselves for free. I always send copies directly to reviewers that I know. That way I can get a fair shot for a intellegent review. Sometimes this backfires and it's not reviewed at all, but I would rather have that than get a review by some smart-ass who had his own agenda. As far as Festival Promoters go, personal relationships are everything. That and relentless persistence. And yes, there are (low) thousands of "jazz" groups who think they should have a shot at a festival. I talked to one US festival promoter not long ago and he had hundreds of requests, cds and other material from just pianists! His festival is in June and when I talked to him it was mid October!

Here's a nice video of Pepper stomping through a tune: Pepper Adams He was a guy who always had fun on the stage and made others play well and sound good, as witnessed here.

Chris, this is also a excellent idea. I can contribute cds, photos and other music packages like live shows from time to time.

You an also use a regular ole' credit card through PayPal, like I did last month for the Organissimo cause. Jim, might I suggest a bi-annual fund raiser?

And that's a bad thing? My 2 cents: There's a old saying that you should never discuss relogion or politics with relatives. That may apply here. Keep it to music; No Sports, No News, No Politics etc. There are lots of other places to go for that talk. Just keep it to music that we love and you'll see a lot of stupid and hateful shit go away. To pay for your expenses, make it a subcription after 30 days or so. That will let people try it out for a time and test the water and filter out some of the nut cases, who will go away if they have to pay for their opinions to be aired. At AAJ, there are some very nice people, but they have opted to have strict monitoring. It works for them but recently I was asked to delete a pretty benign comment I made when I said a post was " lame and ignorant". I thought that was a little puritanical, but gthat's the rules they operate by, and I respect that.

Old 110 film - calling all photographers!!
marcello replied to skeith's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'd say just bring it anyplace that offers real "Kodak" processing (now going under the Qualex or Kodalux names). What they do is they ship it to Kodak, in Rochester, to be processed. Kodak has been tearing down buildings like mad here, so you may want to contact Kodak directly first. They may not even have the facilities to do it themselves anymore. By the way, 110 film is less 1//2 the size of a 35mm negative. Your problem with quality is that you may be printing too large of image. Otherwise the place that you took it to be process and printed did a bad job. Kodak itself, alway did a great job. -
Chris Potter - FOLLOW THE RED LINE (Live at the Vanguard)
marcello replied to JSngry's topic in New Releases
He's been around NYC for about 10 years. Started with Betty Carter. Like several other young drummers, he does some production of his own and has many musical interests and connections. -

Tom Harrell recorded on a new Wayne Escoffery date three days ago, and was just fine by reports.

The only time I saw ST live was a a small benefit concert just a few weeks before he died. He was wonderful playing "In a Sentimental Mood".

Dan, Take from me (I'm a Builder) that there is no product, especially in Flordia, that won't fade. A high quality stucco product, applied to specs, is not only long lasting but a energy saver too. Correct sealants will stop the water and if you stucco over insluation board that will not only help your energy use but will also give you another layer of water protection.
