  1. Happy Birthday, Noj!
  2. At least he leaving the steel drums alone. The CIA uses them at Gitmo, I believe. I see he using Hassan Shakur on bass, who used to be known as J.J. Wiggins. Here he is with Mercer Ellington in1975 or so: I guess that's the David Williams we all know, also on bass. I believe he's from Trinadad. Here he is with Elvin Jones and Ryo Kawasaki around the same time:
  3. Where's Danny D'Imperio when you really need him? 7/4, pass the popcorn.
  4. Nate, I saw him at the Vangurd post stroke where he played tenor and a bent flute with one hand. And he sang his ass of on "Make me a Pallet on the Floor". Hiton Ruiz, Sonny Brown and Steve Turre were in the band. Another time I saw Him at the Colonial Tavern in Toronto, which had a elevated stage, high ceiling and a balcony. The band started playing and RRK emerged from a door on ther ground floor playing (a intense circular breathing solo on tenor) and walking through the crowd for a long time, right up the stairs to the center of the stage, and then he took the energy up even higher. It was fuckin' great. Incredible even.
  5. He used all of his tools on every recording, that is there is not just one record under his own name where he just sticks to say, tenor. Plase correct me if I'm wrong. Too bad you didn't see him live, but why don't you pick up that Mingus record where he jams on Perdido, up and out and over on tenor (maybe some stritch in there too). Even George Adams was scared!
  6. Here ya go:
  7. You mean this one? These are some photos of mine that show Ricky Ford when he was with Mercer Ellington, before he was with Mingus. Ford was one of the best of that generation, but I've not heard anything by him in quite a while. The last I heard he was in Istanbul. I tried to get that Cd of him and Yusef, but to no avail.

  9. Joe Locke and Bobby Hutcherson at Jazz Baltica
  10. I'm almost afraid to ask, but what is "typical Ellington"? I mean... oh, never mind. But them, you'll like them.
  11. I know Jonny King a little. He's given me some copyright law advise. The last time I heard him was at a late night set at Dizzy's last year. He's a fine pianist and composer. He told me he went to harvard in the same class as Barack Obama.
  12. These have been mentioned I believe but here are some favorites:

    Marian McPartland

Here's a good meeting of the minds: And some photos of mine from about the same time:
  14. Yeah, but how many of those "thousands" of records you own are actually good? That's what's important. Having said that, I own about 3500 jazz cds. I can't resist. Even without knowing you, I can safely say that Chuck's beer farts have more experience than you. Don't take that the wrong way, because it applies to me too. I just know how to accept the fact.
  15. I'll be at this gig, but early in the week: D) 'The Music of Henry Mancini' (Joe Locke, Geoff Keezer, Kenny Washington) (Dizzy's Club Cola) The band also has George Mraz and Clarence Penn. Kenny Washington is the singer, from San Francisco, not the drummer. Great singer!
  16. Bobby Hutcherson and Joe Locke play Old Folks at Jazz Baltica last year:
  17. Here's a very nice article about Hadley and his career by Todd Matthews: Hadley Caliman's Survival Skills
  18. Hadley Caliman, "Gratitude" Origin 82499 "...a living legend in full-form." Earshot Jazz Returning with his first recording as a leader in over two decades, the legendary tenor saxophonist teams up with vibist Joe Locke, drummer Joe LaBarbera, trumpeter Thomas Marriott and bassist Phil Sparks, re-establishing himself as one of the preeminent post-bop saxophonists alive. Caliman studied with Dexter Gordon, played with Gerald Wilson's Big Band, the Bobby Bryant Band, & Mongo Santamaria in the '50s, and later toured and recorded with Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson and Santana throughout the US and Europe through the '70s. If I recall chewy, there will be a cd relaese performance with all of the musicians on the record, in March
  19. Jimmy Heath started on alto and never went back after the tenor. He also has a great sound on soprano.
  20. My son has been bringing home flash drives like this from club dates, given out by small independent rock bands, for a couple of years now.
  21. You're correct porcy. Sooner or later all home media will be delivered via hi resolution broadband. But in the meantime, I have a Blu-ray.
  22. This one shows not only a more "individualist" approach, but is a fine tenor saxophone document of recent times. You saxophonists may want to see this series of short lectures: JB teaches
  23. OOPS! I sent a email, but now a PM...honest!
