  4. Claude, I think you're right on the money. The future will be bundled packages of different formats of Hi Res products in one download (audio, video, complete artist websites, live shows, photos etc.), through your multi-terabyte computer, to your various playback devices. When the iPod comes out with a 1 terabyte model, you'll see things move in that direction a lot quicker. Your computer will be your server.
  5. I saw the same band three weeks ago Ron. I felt the same way as you, although I guess it is brave on Allen's part to have a dancer as a real member of the band. A little pacing there would have gone a long way. I saw Branford's band tonight and pacing was also a problem with too many long and somewhat meandering ballads. Tain was great, as usual and kept things moving along and interesting. They played three of his (Tain's) compositions, one by Joey Calderazzo, a nice bass solo piece by Eric Revis, one by a 16th century composer and one by Paul Motion. No songs from the pen of Branford, who played...nice.

  9. That would be mighty cool, of course! That's what I assume. I talked to him very briefly about it a couple of weeks ago during a chance encounter. He was in the process of getting a release from the club owner, who I used to work for when I was a kid.
  10. Herer's on of my photos from the University of Rochester in 1975. He was part of a kind of history of jazz workshop. I was surprised to see him.
  11. Just quicky, in the not so distant future all of the entertainment in the home will come streaming throught your computer to various devises in your home. For music, packages will come bundled with hi resolution music files, ringtones, live and outake music, videos, fansites/blogs and other multi media in one neat little package and saved directly on your computer and easy to access through desktop widgets. They might even throw in a real cd, if you want it. The large labels, as we know them, will take a bigger piece of the live performance pie and support tours large and small, but for the most part they will concentrate on only the largest acts.
  12. Isn't that the first line from "Mucus Head Blues"? ...to the melody of Lonely Avenue! BTW: drink lots of water. My wife had hers for nine days.
  13. Some of these I knew, some I cheated: Miles Davis / Monk Live At Newport- 1958 & 1963 Barney Wilen Quartet - Newport 1959 Clifford Brown - The Last Concert Toshiko Akiyoshi & Leon Sash At Newport Eddie Costa Memorial John Coltrane - My Favorite Things: Coltrane At Newport
  14. Probably makes most of his money from capital gains or dividends both of which are taxed at 15% in the US. Like I said, he's showboating, letting people believe that he and his secretary are on the same playing field. He probally has huge tax credits and tax losses that he has from his various investments to offset his tax bill. No big secret there, but you have to have the cash to buy them in the first place. I'm sorry, Marcello, but what kind of investment tax credits would these be? I do not mean to imply that your argument is incorrect, but nothing comes to mind. As for carryover losses, the only way that these would affect Warren Buffett's effective tax rate is if such losses were offsetting current short-term gains, which are taxed at a rate higher than 15%. If Buffett had a $5 million capital loss carryover from 2005 and $10 million in long-term gains in 2006, then his effective tax rate insofar as capital gains are considered would still be 15%. Indeed, in this instance, utilization of the carryover loss would only serve to increase his overall effective tax rate (i.e., $10 million taxed at 15% would drive down his overall effective rate (which would take into consideration his ordinary income) much more than $5 million taxed at 15%). Only $3,000 of capital losses may be used to offset ordinary income each year, so such losses would have a negligible effect on Buffett's other income (such as salary and interest) taxed at ordinary rates. You may well be right, but considering Warren Buffett's investment strategy and his long-term success as an investor, I find it hard to believe that he would have amassed a substantial capital loss carryover in prior years. You can actually buy tax credits and tax losses from other investment trusts and REITS and others. Each deal is different depending on the term of the investment. and they are never bought $1 for $1. There are also, as a example state and federal programs that bundel tax credits with very low and long term interest rates in exchange for considerations like developing some portion of a real estate development for moderate income people for a certian number of years. For Seniors, for example. There are many many ways that, if you have the csah to spend and the taxes to protect, to aquire tax credits and tax losses. You can defer them to when you need them of take them all at once. Boston Capital has long been a leader and innovator in these investments.

  16. I'd like to see some video (good video) of the '73 - '75 bands. By the way, I hear Belden is trying to issue the set made at Duffy's (in Rochester) in '69.
  17. Very lucid post (#17) by Conn. The people who are wealthy enough to be subject to the death tax have financial instruments such as trusts, to shelter pass through income to a large extent. With the escalation of real estate prices in major markets, that means a lot of people. The families that get hurt by the tax are those who aren't prepared and many small business owners, farmers etc. whose assets appreciate and mabe have had poor tax planning. Re: Warren Buffet - I think this is bullshit. I'd like to see his tax returns. He says that he does no special tax planning and just follows the tax code. That can't be true. My accountant must be reading the wrong code when tax time comes. Buffett must be taking advantage of multiple trusts, deferred bonuses and income and the like to claim such little tax burden. He's showboating.
  18. Happy Birthday Conn!!! Keep Swingin'!
  19. I agree with Tom. The set also includes music from his Hip Ensemble bands from the 70's, as example. Most people don't have those records ( I have one). Like Tom said it's a anthology. It's really looks like a well put togethers set. This is one of the problems with buying from the internet. In a store you could hold this thing in your hands and to get a real appreciation for the thing.
  20. I believe the DVD contains video of Roy at one of Jack Kleinsinger's Highlights in Jazz concerts - tribute to Bird perhaps? Marla Yes Marla, from 1973. It's a solo.
  21. I received this a couple of weeks ago at Roy's gig at JazzImpov. It includes a wide rage of tracks throught his career from Pres to the Dreyfus years, and includes a DVD. I haven't listened to it yet, but there's a lot of music and a nice booklet.
  22. Sam Jones was from Jacksonville. I have a nice tape of the Sam Jones/Tom Harrell Big Band. Charles Tolliver was born in Jacksonville. Moved to NYC when he was 10. Gigi Gryce was born in Pensacola! He's buried there. Fats Navarro was from Key West.
  23. Well, I hope that clears that up. Thanks!
