  1. What a great show it was! I would never guess in a million years that Roy is 77 years old! He is still going strong. The show started off with Roy receiving a plaque from a Milwaukee alderman proclaiming March 31 as Roy Haynes day. Roy accepted gracefully by telling about a conversation he had with someone about how they didn't think anyone in "Wesconsin" even knew what jazz was Roy pounded on the skins for a solid 2 hours, this man has more energy than most people half his age! One cool part was when he finished one of his solos, he came up to the front mic and tapped a groovin tune on the mic with his hand, actually sounded great. Aside from Roy, I think I was most impressed with Dave Kikoski on the Piano, he certainly was fun to watch. I think I might have to find some of his recordings. Dave Holland, Kenny Garrett and Nicholas Payton also put forth a very solid performance. Roy mentioned that this was one of his last performances for awhile, but if he shows up in your part of the world, don't miss him!
  2. Beer up the but chicken is my favorite on the grill. I'm a gas grill person, charcol is just too much trouble.
  3. According to the March Mosaic Brochure..."This fall, we will release Selects on Paul Chambers and John Patton".
  4. Tickets start at $35 for the nose bleed section, then $45, $55 and $65 plus service charge! I guess the Pabst Theater is a pretty fancy place, never been there. It is the fourth oldest Theater in the US so the web site says.
  5. May 31, Roy Haynes with Dave Holland, Kenny Garrett, Nicholas Payton and Dave Kikoski will be at the historic Pabst Theater in Milwaukee. I'm very excited since this will be my first real jazz concert. Hope it smokes, since I paid $70 a ticket for 2nd row seats! ouch!
  6. Why do these go so cheap? Thanks for the input, BeBop.
  7. Just wondering what you all knowing jazzophiles can tell me about Black Lion Records. I've seen a few discs from this label by Bud Powell, Ruby Braff etc. I was tempted to pick some up but was unsure about them. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  14. If you want surround sound while watching movies, you will need (2) front speakers, (1) center channel, (2) surround speakers and a subwoofer. In order to power the 5.1 speakers you will need a dolby digital/Dts capable receiver. Many are available in the $200-300 range. Check out Yamaha, Onkyo, Denon and Pioneer, they all make good budget level surround receivers. Hope this helps.
  15. I'm tuning up my wife's and my mountain bike this weekend, the trails should be opening soon...can't wait! We just got into mountain biking last year. I have been a big road biker for years but just got bored of endless pedaling down the road. Mountain biking is a great challenge, we have some decent trails here in wisconsin with lots of stumps, rocks, trees, creeks etc. Can't wait to get out there!!!
  16. The other night I was sitting around with a couple of buddies having a few cold ones and we started playing this stupid but kind of entertaining game...It goes like this...The first person names a jazz musician, say Miles Davis. The next person has to name a jazz artist whose first name begins with the first letter of the last name of prior response, this case a D...so Dexter Gordon etc. NO REPEATS are allowed. At first it's very easy but gets harder as go. If you can't name one, you have to do a shot! I know, we must have been really bored!! Wanna Play? Rules: No Repeats Post every 5th response at most (give others a chance) First name is: Dexter Gordon
  17. damn, I guess I missed it Thanks for the tip anyway. How much was it?
  18. I have bought many cd's from Ron, including the Hill's which I paid more than I would have liked but they are sealed and he is extremely reliable and fast in shipment. He is a great ebay seller and I will continue to do business with him. He seems to always have some great BN OOP's for sale!
  19. So...OBI is a word, not an acronim? I initially thought it stood for something like 'outer binder insert' or something like that! Shows what I know! Do you pronouce it like the Star Wars character? I have seen some ebay auctions that describe " complete with fax obi" ....what does that mean, the fax part?
  20. I just picked up Andrew Hill's Judgement and Smokestack for approx $25 a piece, more than I wanted to pay but after a couple of beers, it doesn't feel too bad! Freddie Hubbard - Ready For Freddie still eludes me, anyone have one for sale? The most I have paid is $28.00 for Hank Mobley's Slice of The Top sealed, it's only money, right? Oops, forgot about the $30 I paid for Tina's True Blue, damn this is getting out of hand!
  21. does this relate to cd's somehow? Please enlighten me! I thought OBI had something to do with Star Wars!
  22. Just wondering what OBI means. I know it's that spine cover insert thingy but what does it stand for and what is the purpose of it anyway?
