JSngry Posted August 1, 2012 Report Posted August 1, 2012 Thornell Schwartz! Cuttin' up! Paul Humphrey on neutral ground. but - Bob West on Fender bass? Huh? Why? Uh...no, please? Quote
JSngry Posted August 1, 2012 Report Posted August 1, 2012 Same for Groove's vocal on "Poke Salad Annie"...not even "good for what it is". But Thornell Schwartz is ALL good here! Quote
JSngry Posted August 1, 2012 Report Posted August 1, 2012 Issued on RCA with little to no fanfare. Totally solo (albeit overdubbed solo), and totally badass. Eddie Harris was a complicated man. Not sure if no one understood him but his woman or not, but...this is a serious album with some serious playing on it. Quote
JSngry Posted August 1, 2012 Report Posted August 1, 2012 Apparently this is readily available on CD, but with some additional, unrelated, irrelevant material added. I got the Spindletop LP without all that nonsense. And nonsense-free it is. Splendid playing by both men. If all you know of Eddie Harris is the commercial stuff, and/or if all you know of Ellis Marsalis is his offspring, then this album will show you that even if you can't ultimately get past that, you could if you wanted to. Quote
JSngry Posted August 1, 2012 Report Posted August 1, 2012 It's got a deep groove! The LP, not the music... Quote
jazzbo Posted August 1, 2012 Report Posted August 1, 2012 I've got that one, need to spin it soon. Right now Quote
JSngry Posted August 1, 2012 Report Posted August 1, 2012 (edited) Has the cumulative material on that Capitol thing ever been out on one CD? Edited August 1, 2012 by JSngry Quote
jeffcrom Posted August 1, 2012 Report Posted August 1, 2012 Gary Burton - Tennessee Firebird (RCA Victor stereo). A strange one - Burton's group playing with Nashville country musicians - The Osborne Brothers, Charlie McCoy, Chet Atkins, etc.. Not everything works, but some tracks are very enjoyable. Quote
JSngry Posted August 1, 2012 Report Posted August 1, 2012 This ended up being a significantly better record than I was expecting...the Quintet cuts with Dolphy are more heated than the other stuff of theirs I've heard, the vocal cuts are warmly quirky with an old-school huge sounding sax section providing the backgrounds, and the drum solos are nothing short of magnificent. I was expecting some equally pleasurable but significantly less substantial music. But ok, this then! Quote
jeffcrom Posted August 2, 2012 Report Posted August 2, 2012 ...the Quintet cuts with Dolphy are more heated than the other stuff of theirs I've heard.... I agree - these are the best Dolphy-with-Hamilton tracks out there. I don't care too much for Chico's singing, though. Right now: Vernard Johnson - Live (Glori). One of Dr. Johnson's best. Quote
jeffcrom Posted August 2, 2012 Report Posted August 2, 2012 Prompted by some recent discussion, since I hadn't heard this one for awhile: Lee Konitz - Spirits (Milestone) I remembered it being good. I hadn't remembered that it was this good. Quote

BillF Posted August 2, 2012 Report Posted August 2, 2012 Frank Rosolino 'Frankly Speaking' (Capitol Japan) Another favourite! Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted August 2, 2012 Report Posted August 2, 2012 Thornell Schwartz! Cuttin' up! Paul Humphrey on neutral ground. but - Bob West on Fender bass? Huh? Why? Uh...no, please? Sorry, almost de rigeur for the time. I agree with both your posts and would add that I don't like the sound the X77 makes. But Thorny!!! That man made so much good music with organists, it's just not true. MG Quote
