Ed Shaughnessy is freakin' GONZO on the title cut, but then again, so is the whole chart, not just in its writing, but in its execution. Overall, it's a worthwhile curiosity in the Oliver Nelson discography. Not really any cut-corners, not there could be as the years went by and the workload reached massive proportions.

Was Lloyd Mayers playing organ or piano on that date, Jim?

MG

Organ all the way.

Dave Brubeck Octet (Fantasy red vinyl). My longtime bassist gave this to me during a visit to his house. He called it "too academic"; I know what he means, but I like it. And so did Cecil Taylor as a young man.

Lou Donaldson - Rough House Blues (Cadet mono). One of the perks of a gig in Columbia, SC was the chance to visit Papa Jazz Records. This was one of my finds - the sticker says "VG," but damn if it's not NM.

I want to spin "Days of Wine and Roses" again and just listen to Richard Davis' bass lines.

Aretha Franklin - Soul Sister (Columbia 2-eye stereo). I had never checked out Aretha's Columbia output, but I found this in the dollar bin in a local record store. Better than I expected - the arrangements and some of the tunes are regrettable, but it's still Aretha.

After several hours of Anthony Braxton today, my ears and brain wanted something very different:

George Lewis at Home (Dan). One of a series of great Japanese issues featuring otherwise unissued American Music masters.

Several very cool 10" LPs:

George Lewis/Freddie Kohlman - New Orleans Jazz Concert (Decca). A 1952 concert with my favorite George Lewis band - the one with Percy Humphrey on trumpet. Side two, with Freddie Kohlman's band, is kind of frantic, in spite of the presence of Willie Humphrey on clarinet.

Jamming at Rudi's No. 2 (Circle). A KC-style jam session, with Hot Lips Page, Tyree Glenn, Paul Quinichette, Danny Barker, Walter Page, Sonny Greer, etc.

Charlie Mariano - Modern Saxaphone Stylings (sic) (Imperial). Some of Mariano's (and Jaki Byard's) first recordings.

Sidney Bechet - La Nuit est une Sorcière (London). I have Bechet's ballet on CD, but I love this mint-condition deluxe boxed edition.

Lionel Hampton meets early/mid 1970s Chicago R&B tracks (presumably assembled by Willie Henderson?). Lionel Hampton sounds perfectly at home and totally like Lionel Hampton.

Has this ever not been the case?

I nearly bought that when it came out, but the guy in the shop was such a hard-sell guy that I refused to buy anything from him. Oh well... Glad one copy has found a good home.
