Clunky Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 Cecil Payne-----The Connection ---- (Charlie Parker Records) UK stereo Strong session. Very good pressing in excellent condition, sounding great despite being a "budget" 1962 release. Quote
mjazzg Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 Kenny Wheeler - Around 6 [ECM] my favourite Kenny ECM. Couldn't resist a vinyl copy in Oxfam this weekend. Quote

I have the feeling that it was something to do with that budget label Everest. Edited December 14, 2014 by sidewinder Quote

Homefromtheforest Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 Kenny Wheeler - Around 6 [ECM] my favourite Kenny ECM. Couldn't resist a vinyl copy in Oxfam this weekend. That's certainly a great one and in my top few Wheelers as well. Love the opening track and Vesala shines throughout. Started with a USA pressing and now own a Japanese pressing. May one day try a German pressing just for comparisons sake as it is a gem... Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 Tonight's spins: Art Blakey "the big beat" (blue note, 47 w 63rd DG stereo) Hank Mobley "s/t" (blue note 1568, mono Japan King) Embryo "we keep on" (BASF, Germany) Spontaneous Music Ensemble "oliv" (marmalade, UK) Quote

Homefromtheforest Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 Yeah I've never done a A/B comparison between German and Japanese ECM Lps but I must say those 70s Japanese ECM issues on Trio sound quite beautiful as well... Quote
mjazzg Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 Chico Freeman: Spirit Sensitive I've often wondered about that one. Is it as restrained as I've heard tell? effectively a ballad album? Quote
soulpope Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 Chico Freeman: Spirit Sensitive a beloved record to me..... Quote

king ubu Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 Noah Howard Quartetto - Live at the Swing Club Torino Italy (Altsax Records, SNIR 25055) Is this really the 1974 original? weird to use "SNIR" for a label that's called "Altsax" ... but that's the info I could gather from the back cover and from discogs and other similar sites ... wasn't exactly cheap, but still a pretty nice find, I think! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 (edited) Ricordi International (SNIR) did custom pressings for a lot of very small Italian labels/artists. The first Altsax Record, Patterns (recorded in Holland) was AMC (Altsax Music Company) 1000. What you have is the original/only issue until the recent grey-market Serie.WOC reissue. king ubu Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 Not really sure, after some more rounds of checking website listings ... it might in fact be the seriEWOC one after all - I'd need to see a backcover of the original to say for sure. Anyway, sound is reasonably good and the music better than that! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 What's in the dead wax? OG is in a very thin matte paper cover and the print is black, rather than the greenish tint. Labels are bright green with black print. Fairly thin vinyl, maybe 120 grams on the original as well. I would say one super easy way to tell them apart is, of course, the sticker price! Quote
Leeway Posted December 16, 2014 Report Posted December 16, 2014 OLD EYES - Joe McPhee. One of the sterling McPhee LPs on Hat HUT. Wonderful group, monster rendition of "Django." Quote
colinmce Posted December 16, 2014 Report Posted December 16, 2014 It's well worth tracking down the CD which adds a brilliant suite of 1990 improvisations with Urs Leimgruber & Fritz Hauser. Oh, and please begin my funeral with the title track. Quote
