jeffcrom Posted June 4, 2015 Report Posted June 4, 2015 Kid Ory-----This Kid's the greatest-----(Good Time Jazz/ Vogue) UK 1962 issue Compilation of Ory's organisation (1953-1956). I've played this four or five times and it's good. When I was a kid and got interested in jazz, my sweet mom would bring home anything that looked like an interesting jazz album found during her junk store jaunts. She came home one day with a copy of the US Good Time Jazz issue of this, which I still have. I was so entranced by the power of Ory's playing on this; I thought, "I hope I can play like that when I'm 70." Quote
sidewinder Posted June 4, 2015 Report Posted June 4, 2015 (edited) Herbie Hancock 'Speak Like A Child' (BN French Pathe Marconi DMM) It should be garbage but with the phono stage having been z-foiled it sounds pretty damn good ! Time to dig out the old DMMs.. Edited June 4, 2015 by sidewinder Quote

Time to dig out the old DMMs.. Used to have a somewhat worn Liberty gatefold, which was my dad's. I wasn't as struck by the music as I'd hoped to be. Quote
paul secor Posted June 4, 2015 Report Posted June 4, 2015 The Sextet of Orchestra USA (RCA France) Some good Eric Dolphy on this one and a couple of good solos by Jimmy Raney and Thad Jones, but there's better by all in other places. Quote
mjazzg Posted June 4, 2015 Report Posted June 4, 2015 Joe McPhee - Graphics [Hat Art] new arrival. lovely stuff Quote

The DMM has sat on the shelf for years, really surprised how good it sounds. This has always been a favourite Herbie session, along with 'The Prisoner'. Quote
corto maltese Posted June 5, 2015 Report Posted June 5, 2015 For collecting Blue Note LP's on a budget, when you can live with these Frech DMM pressing, this opens a whole new world full of possibilities. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 5, 2015 Report Posted June 5, 2015 Indeed - I have dozens of these things, which were effectively my intro to Blue Note. They have been stuck in my racks for years, amazing I didn't dispose of them really. Golden rule - never, ever get rid of vinyl ! Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted June 5, 2015 Report Posted June 5, 2015 (edited) Just finished: Stanley Turrentine - Blue Hour (Blue Note/Music Matters). What a great sounding record! I just love the music but Music Matters really made this the best sounding LP version I've ever heard. Now that that record finished, a beauty from the Pacific Jazz stable is playing... Cy Touff - Havin' A Ball (World Pacific Records). A nice deep groove LP. Even though it's well played and the jacket is taped on all three sides, it's still great stuff. I always loved Richie Kamuca's playing on this date (as heard on the Connoissuer CD). Weirdly, this LP had one or two tracks come & go (this one has "Lazy River" and misses "Primitive Cats") and yet the CD misses "Lazy River" too. Why didn't Cuscuna add "Lazy River" to the CD? It's only 2:45. Edited June 5, 2015 by Kevin Bresnahan Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 5, 2015 Report Posted June 5, 2015 Picked up a Liberty of that Turrentine/3 Sounds LP years ago - it's really something special. Never had a rule to not sell vinyl - if I upgrade it or am not into it, out it goes. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted June 6, 2015 Report Posted June 6, 2015 Jean Claude Eloy "gaku no michi" (disques ades, France) Have not played this in years; this and "shanti" are favorites of mine in the musique concrete realm. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 6, 2015 Report Posted June 6, 2015 Wayne Shorter 'Speak No Evil' Another Pathe Macaroni brought back from the dead and sounding - excellent ! Quote
sidewinder Posted June 6, 2015 Report Posted June 6, 2015 (edited) Kenny Dorham 'Matador' (King) One example where an out-of-tune piano adds to the ambience ! Edited June 6, 2015 by sidewinder Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted June 6, 2015 Report Posted June 6, 2015 Is your cover really green like that? Close, but probably more toward blue. If you do a Google image search for this LP, you get the full color gamut. Quote

jcam_44 Posted June 6, 2015 Report Posted June 6, 2015 Oliver Nelson - The Blues and the Abstract Truth nice $5 find. It's a reissue but looks like it was never played. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted June 7, 2015 Report Posted June 7, 2015 Freddie Hubbard "open sesame" (Blue Note, King Japan) Can "Tago Mago" (united artists, Germany) record 1; even after 20+ years of owning this album I still find record 2 a bit indulgent Quote
