Thats great. I think Armen Donelian is a great pianist for Billy. The group on Denon seems to me the best Billy had.

Hard to make a choice with pianists like Harold Mabern and Kenny Barron ....

Vinyl day today:

R-6391846-1420892665-4195.jpeg.jpg

Jimmy Rowles with Buster Williams and Billy Hart. A true free mind at the piano, free of any cliché.

R-2779919-1473538020-1157.jpeg.jpg

Recorded live at a Polish festival. Side one is nice, solo piano with Rowles reminiscing between songs. But side two is a jam session with players not up to his level and an average singer, and in bad sound.

R-14637877-1578676870-2690.jpeg.jpg

A compilation of two Eddie Heywood and one Barney Bigard session for Signature, with Manne and Heywood as common denominators. Someone really should issue a box set with all Sigbature sessions.

R-5837119-1464035039-1197.jpeg.jpg

Heywood is very underrated. His 1940's sessions are all great. Very original arrangements.

Another free-minded veteran pianist.

Taylor Ho Bynum - Enter The Plustet (2015).

Certainly one of my favourite big band releases of the last few years. So much detail in the massed arrangements, but it still leaves space for individual players to amaze, particularly Ken Filiano on bass.

Shelley Manne - The Three & The Two

Another beige record cover. The real surprise for me with this album isn’t Giuffe and Manne, who are obviously excellent here, but Shorty Rogers, who is so capable at moving in such uncharted waters. I normally associate Rogers with hokey orchestrated 50s fun (not a criticism!), but here he is at the harmonic cutting edge.

In that Decca series, I have the same volume 1 of the Lunceford, volume 2 Fletcher Henderson, and Jay McShann in mono. I wish I could find more as they sound great, but almost every time I find one of this series, it is rechanneled stereo.

Billy Harper - The Believer [Baystate]

First listen to today's new arrival.  Purchased solely based on all the love it gets on this board, and because I like other two BH albums I have.  I do think more might well be coming...

It still bugs me that the Billy Harper Club CDR I had of this session died and they never answered any of my requests to replace it. It's one of the reasons I refuse to buy CD-Rs of any session today. Of the few I already had, they are backed up as WAV files on my hard drive in case this happens again.

cracking good album. I have the FMP reissue, which sounds great, but the private original pressing is pretty sick!

Mine's a little bit of a crackling good album unfortunately.  Doesn't detract too much from the impact of the music though.  Signed by Favre and Schweizer too, although I've no proof they're legit.

Pierre Favre Trio - Santana [Pip]

I wasn't aware of this one. I am a big fan of Schweizer + Favre (their intakt duo is great) so this looks pretty enticing. I see it is available to buy digitally, so I may give that go.
