Chico looks so confident compared to the Marsalis boys....

Remember buying that LP around 1982. There was a real feel that modern jazz was on the up again around that time, after a while in the doldrums, with that LP something of a marker for the upsurge.

I hadn't noticed that everyone on the sleeve has a moustache. Branford's looks like it took exactly 14 3/4 years to grow.

I think the collection of 8 LPs I have was Japanese Verve, I´m not sure. It´s interesting that they are not chronological, I think the first one is some a bit too bombastic big band stuff. That "Temptation" sounds a bit too much like an old movie score.
Some of them are very fine: Especially the one which has "Chi Chi" on it, that is a good session where Granz didn´t interfere with the music or the personnel, it´s vintage Charlie Parker quartet with top players.

I have not spinned it for decades, I still prefer the Savoy and Dial recordings....., and the early 50´s Birdland recordings....

A disc that goes to my desert island.

It got a "Which record is this?" from my wife, which is always my seal of quality for a record.

The opening Just Friends is my favourite standard interpretation ever.

Milford Graves and Don Pullen - Nommo

PXL_20231202_204127343.jpg.ee7d29c13398dd14cde9fb6598d182b9.jpg

This is a record that was huge for me in the early days of really really getting into jazz.

I remember 20 years ago staring at an inserted image on a blog, trying to make out the album cover on this thing, whilst wondering who these unknown musicians Milford Graves and Don Pullen were. So strange to have it in LP format in 2023.

Ironically, it was increasing familiarisation with both musicians that probably led to this record slipping from my mind to the extent it has. Pullen in particular I associate with his great 80s records, and no longer associate him with this album. Having bought it today, it is the first time I have listened to this record in around 6 years. It is bringing back huge waves of nostalgia.

What a magical album.
