Rabshakeh Posted January 1, 2024 Report Posted January 1, 2024 Keeping up the flow, my son's current favourite: the Yazoo comp of early Blind Willie McTell. He particularly digs 'Georgia Rag', which he believes is about an actual rag. I may invest in some Blind Blake this year Now on to Daddy's choice: Albert Ayler in Greenwich Village. Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted January 2, 2024 Report Posted January 2, 2024 Gene Ammons - Blue Gene (Prestige/OJC). I do love the way Gene does the blues. Always swinging. I believe that this 1985 OJC LP was the first time this session was issued in stereo. Quote

sidewinder Posted January 5, 2024 Report Posted January 5, 2024 (edited) Having spent a wonderful few hours this afternoon at this location (without being flooded out too !) there's only one record to spin.. It's never been the same though since the days (circa 1970) of playing cricket with tennis ball against the stones. 😮 Edited January 5, 2024 by sidewinder Quote

Online prices are currently £125 and upwards so it will take a decent month or a very weak moment as it stands circa 1980, camping there at the Solstice with a few hundred others for the free festival. More drugs on sale than the entire chain of Boots had on sale, an innocent student didn't know what to do... Edited January 5, 2024 by mjazzg Quote
sidewinder Posted January 5, 2024 Report Posted January 5, 2024 (edited) Yeah, Never went for those festivals. Not my thing at all.. As a youngster when driving past on the A303 with the family we used to pull in and have a break at the stones. At the time there was no visitor centre, nor were there any barriers preventing access - a free-for-all really. So it seemed pretty natural as a kid to pick out one of the sacred blue stones from the Prescili Mountains and use it as a wicket. Just the right height !! Discogs seems to have a nice NM copy from a UK dealer of 'Stonehenge'. Probably worth the £175..(gulp). Edited January 5, 2024 by sidewinder Quote
mjazzg Posted January 5, 2024 Report Posted January 5, 2024 Back to the album, the Stonehenge side is online and is terrific. How's the other side compare? Quote
sidewinder Posted January 5, 2024 Report Posted January 5, 2024 (edited) Side 2 has 5 tracks in a sort of 'third stream' style. Interesting to see that now 98 year old Tony Kinsey is on this LP, on percussion. Edited January 5, 2024 by sidewinder Quote
sidewinder Posted January 5, 2024 Report Posted January 5, 2024 No probs. I can confirm that side 2 is pretty nice. Not as 'stately' as the suite in side 1 but classy stuff. Quote
mjazzg Posted January 5, 2024 Report Posted January 5, 2024 Classy third stream works for me. Now to find a copy. I can't imagine it was a huge seller at the time which may account for it being so few and far between Quote

Pim Posted January 6, 2024 Report Posted January 6, 2024 (edited) such a great 3LP compilation from MCA Japan. Great discographical information. For 10 euros truly a steal. And it might be just my imagination or what I want to hear: but the sound quality is the best I’ve heard up till now with these Columbia/Decca records. Better than my They don’t sound like they were recorded in the 40’s. Edited January 6, 2024 by Pim Quote
