Clunky Posted April 16, 2025 Report Posted April 16, 2025 I've had a meditative afternoon of randomly pulling Sun Ra LPs off my shelves prompted by the RSD 2025 release of the Fondation Maeght concerts. I wasn't going to get the Maeght but was offered it at cost price so I couldn't refuse. The music and sound is superlative of course. So this afternoon reissues from the past decade. Monorails and Satellites (3 LP set) Roma '77 ( double LP) Heliocentric Worlds Vol.1 Featuring Pharoah Sanders and Black Harold All solid sets with Roma '77 possibly the most unusual . I really need to stop buying Sun Ra because I have way too much already but it's never disinteresting ( or at least the ones I pick up !) Quote
HutchFan Posted April 16, 2025 Report Posted April 16, 2025 Now spinning: Junior Mance - Holy Mama (East Wind/Inner City, rec. 1976) with Martin Rivera and Salvatore LaRocca Quote

Arthur Jones----Scorpio----(America) Interesting set. Curiously Discogs dates this issue to 1971 the same year as the BYG release. Seems odd given that they are both French labels. The liners to the America issue are just in English - perhaps this edition was for export ? Sound/pressing is better than typically found from BYG issues. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted April 17, 2025 Report Posted April 17, 2025 Frank Kimbrough - Meantime (Newvelle) This material was originally only released on clear vinyl but Newvelle finally gave in and offers downloads now - at least for some of their releases. Quote

Kurt Anderson Posted April 19, 2025 Report Posted April 19, 2025 Chick Corea's The Sun, maybe the most intense set Corea ever recorded, featuring a blazing Steve Grossman. I was pleased to acquire this in a trade yesterday for records by Bill Frisell and Fred Leeflang. Quote

Quite the band - Corea with Grossman, Dave Holland & Jack DeJohnette. It looks like it has never been put out on CD & some editions are going for big bucks: https://www.discogs.com/master/734497-Chick-Corea-The-Sun Quote
Pim Posted April 20, 2025 Report Posted April 20, 2025 Steve Lacy - Prospectus This was such a strong period and those Hats are absolutely stunning. This one’s with Steve Potts, George Lewis, Bobby Few, Jean Jacques Avanel and Oliver Johnson. Plus Irene Aebi who’s singing I still don’t enjoy where I do dig her cello playing. Essential Lacy: powerful, very energetic and complex music with all those awesome Steve Lacy compositions. Great interaction between all band members too. Plus the sound of these Hats is amazing. This was reissued as Cliches on cd but that misses three tracks the LP version does contain. Weird choice to omit tracks on a reissue. It’s mostly the other way around. Quote

I didn't know they'd changed the name. Why do they do that? As if his discography wasn't already complicated enough. Quote
