Rabshakeh Posted Saturday at 07:59 AM Report Posted Saturday at 07:59 AM Roscoe Mitchell - Old / Quartet I had this on the clear out pile, but I lost heart. It's just such a good record. Quote

Pim Posted Monday at 08:49 AM Report Posted Monday at 08:49 AM Haven’t heard much about this much desired reissue. It was in the last RSD batch. I consider myself a huge Nathan Davis fan and this is one of his many masterpieces. Special shout out to Jimmy Woode on bass, but the whole band is great of course. Glad MPS finally reissued it. There weren’t any affordable vinyl issues before. The sound is very good and comes with a lovely booklet with some beautiful photographs of the band. MPS is very clear about sourcing etc stating that it’s analogue from begin to end. There’s a small sound drop in the last track and in the booklet they say they let it in for it would take a digital step to correct it. Comes with a sticker that says MPS Triple AAA series. Now that might mean there’s more to come from SABA and MPS I this series? That would be awesome. Quote

I'm fine with the reissue; it's a heavy listen and an interesting record but doesn't get a lot of play around here, either (neither did the old CD). The Cherry is a classic; I remember buying my first copy (a US press) in the 90s and being utterly addicted to it. I'd never heard anything like it before. The Roach I had and sold pretty quickly... great cover art, but just not my jam organ-wise. Quote

The Roach I had and sold pretty quickly... great cover art, but just not my jam organ-wise. The Jamal is madly overpriced. I really don't think it is his best save for the echoey dubby effects on side two which are cool. For avantgarde jazz I am One In / One Out at the moment, and the axe has fallen on Drum Dance and Lester Bowie's The Great Pretender. I can't claim to truly love them, so better to create space. For whatever reason my seven year old really likes Don Cherry. He keeps playing Brown Rice to his bewildered school friends. We recently went to a museum in Exeter and the kids got dragged into some sort of marimba and flute happening designed for kids that really did sound like Eternal Rhythm, so that's got the kids obsessed with Cherry's music again. Sadly Eternal Rhythm is one of the few records my wife won't tolerate so it only gets spun when she's having a lie in. The Roach was my late father in law's. I like Roach's music generally but it is not my favourite of his. But still enjoyable enough and nice to keep as a memory. I didn't actually listen to it though: my one year old has taken to "helping" me to chose records, and the record that he was throwing on the floor and jumping on this time was the Roach record, which I then put safely out of harm's way.
