The Early Benny Carter (Everest); cheap issue of some wonderful 1936-37 British recordings.

I've got a couple of those Everests. 'Back in the day' they were just about the cheapest jazz vinyl on sale.

Yep - they were pretty valuable in terms of hearing some great music cheaply. They provided my first hearings of Eric Dolphy, Lightnin' Hopkins, Charlie Parker's Dial recordings (issued under Miles Davis' name), Bird's broadcast recordings, Mingus, etc. I still have the Sonny Rollins (with his Period recordings) and the Lightnin' Hopkins in addition to the Benny Carter; the rest are long gone, replaced by better issues. But I remember them with affection, particularly the three Charlie Parker live albums which were reissues of the Historical Masterpieces series.

Steve Lacy - Soprano Sax (Prestige OJC) I actually prefer Lacy's sideman work from the 1950s to this album. But how cool for a little-known musician to have Wynton Kelly on his debut album as leader!

Was doing a Steve Lacy search and came across this post. And how cool (and unselfish) for a little-known musician doing his debut album to let the two musicians of West Indian background (Kelly and Dennis Charles) to take the only solos on the West Indian tune on the date.

One of my Facebook friends works for a company that manages estate sales. Whenever she posts about a sale and mentions records, I try to go. I've never found anything worth buying - until today. The deceased was a jazz fan - mostly trad and big bands. There were even stacks of 78s - nothing very interesting, unfortunately. But I did buy an Evan Christopher CD and ten LPs, for a buck each. This evening I played the first three:

Zoot Sims - Quartets (Prestige OJC)

The New Orleans All-Stars - In Concert at the Dixieland Jubilee (Dixieland Jubilee/GNP Crescendo)

Ralph Sutton with Ruby Braff - On Sunnie's Side of the Street (Blue Angel Jazz Club)

The Zoot speaks for itself, and I had been looking for the Ralph Sutton record, recorded at his wife's club in 1968. The Dixieland Jubilee is disappointing, despite the presence of some musicians I really like - George Girard, Raymond Burke, and Johnny St. Cyr.
