Chuck Nessa Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 Woody Shaw Complete Muse, CDs 1 & 2. Predictably great set, in improved sound. Nice notes by Woody Jr. and first time I have heard the full 'Sun Bath' session. Great work, Mosaic ! I am curious about the "improved sound". Many years ago Joe Fields, owner of Muse, told me after running mixes of session tapes he had a studio willing to buy the multi-track tapes from him to bulk erase and use again. So, my question is; are there real balance differences or just "modifications" of the 2 track tapes? Quote

So, my question is; are there real balance differences or just "modifications" of the 2 track tapes? Not sure I can fully answer that one but to my ears there is more detail and depth present than on some of the old Muse and 32Jazz CDs I have. Edited July 10, 2014 by sidewinder Quote

sgcim Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 Did a gig last night with a sax player who said he worked for Mosaic. I asked him if there was anything new coming up, and he mentioned some James P. Johnson sides, and the Rosemary Clooney small group sessions 1956-61. Quote

king ubu Posted August 12, 2014 Report Posted August 12, 2014 Played the "Master Jazz Piano" box in the morning - some very good stuff there! Maybe not much that is outstanding, but I really enjoy most of what's on it! Now: Quote
king ubu Posted August 12, 2014 Report Posted August 12, 2014 starting with this one now ... not all of it is very good, but the best of is very good and much of the rest is enjoyable Quote
king ubu Posted August 13, 2014 Report Posted August 13, 2014 Some nice surprises here ... my taste has changed so much so in the meantime (since my last listen a few years ago) that I really enjoy the Ramparts Street Paraders this time. Matlock/Miller are mighty good (I've had a soft spot for Miller for a long time though, ever since first hearing him on the Classic Capitol set by Mosaic) and there's some pretty good stuff by others, too - George van Eps most notably (i.e. Monday Date). Still not that big on Dorsey, I'm afraid ... but I remembered the more than two discs of Ramparts as the least interesting segment of the box and it's a pleasant surprise to listen to it again! That dude on bass sax has some nice spots, too - never really noticed his name, Joe Rushton. Quote
erwbol Posted August 14, 2014 Report Posted August 14, 2014 Still waiting for my Cecil Taylor Mosaic to arrive. Until it does, I'm going to spend some time with the Andrew Hill set. Quote
