sthomas Posted December 4, 2007 Report Posted December 4, 2007 Just finished disc 3 of the Hampton - wow! That Chu Berry!!!!!! I see there must be a good bit of duplication between this set and Chu's. MG Got my set at 10.30 am today !!! Managed to listen repeatedly to disc one only. I know a bit of this material already from Lps but here it sounds great. Not too much cross-over with the Chu set ...really.... didn't put me off... How much overlap is there with the Chu set? Quote
jazzbo Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 The Lionel Hampton box arrived at lunchtime today. Damn good performance from DHL - it was only shipped on Thursday! Oh boy! What a jumpin' set! And I'm not halfway through disc 1 yet! MG Listening to disc one of set #00038 right now. Quote

sidewinder Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 Gotta say i was groovin' so hard almost hard an heart attack. Yep, that disk 6 is a real highlight of a set that is full of highlights. Love it when Jimmy S. comes in for those funky breaks after the loud brass-dominated sections. Quote

I assumed a LOT had gone out as freebies but you having no 38 means that there were a lot of real sales. Unless they're stacked in random order in the warehouse, of course MG Quote
jazzbo Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 (edited) Promotonial copies are not numbered. . . . I think they send these out in order. My friend Dave got his also yesterday, he preordered his the same day I did, but later in the day, and he got set 109. Edited December 5, 2007 by jazzbo Quote
Brute Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 (edited) FIRST POST! I ordered The Hampton set on November 28 and mine came yesterday, too. FYI, I have set #480. I had picked up a few used RCA comps of this material before hearing about the Mosaic and I have to say that they did a wonderful job with the audio and presentation on these songs. The music itself is fantastic and timeless and it's hard to fathom that the first sessions in this set are 70 years old! It sounds great. I was also glad that the very few alt. takes were all placed at the end of the discs. There is a lot of music here for the price. I would totally reccommend this set if anyone's on the fence, it's definitely worth the money and I forsee this set becoming a favorite of mine. I almost view it as the holy grail of small group swing and it really should be required listening for anyone interested in the genre. The only con for me was a few of the tracks on disc 5 with vocals. I like Hamp's vocals but not the others so much (one exception is "I'd Be Lost Without You", great tune!). jazzbo Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 Welcome Mr. B! I'm very glad you posted. I agree with your recommendation and praise of this set! Quote

I like Hamp's vocals but not the others so much (one exception is "I'd Be Lost Without You", great tune!). And a welcome from me, too. I'd agree with your assessment of the vocals. But I was running down the other night when I finished playing through the whole set, so another listen next month (going to concentrate on disc 1 for a while) might change my view of them. MG Quote
Brute Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 Thanks for the welcome, guys. I have been lurking for awhile and I post and read at AAJ, too. Quote
paul secor Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 I'll add my welcome, too! Hope you'll stick around and will continue to contribute to the discussions. Quote
ghost of miles Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 Brute, I know we already exchanged PMs on another topic, but I'll add a public welcome as well... the Quincy and Hamp sets arrived this afternoon, and I'm currently digging BIRTH OF A BAND (how did I ever make it this far without hearing this album) and queing up the first disc from the Hamp set as we speak. Feels like Christmas has come three weeks early... Quote

sidewinder Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 Columbia Small Groups, CD6. After playing this set through with re-runs of every disk (a sure sign that a particular Mosaic set is a really good one) this set is turning out to be one of my favourites of the past few years. Columbia alwayd did get a great recorded sound in that 30th St studio and this set is a great mix of the various players who came under the mainstream umbrella - from Ernie Caceres and Pee-Wee Russell at the more traditional end through to Kenny Burrell and Dave Bailey at the boppier end. All great music ! I find the two Ruby Braff CDs to be one of the best suprises in this set. Quote

How much overlap is there with the Chu set? check the discography on the Mosaic site for details, ( they're blocked at my work), 3 sessions IIRC. one session is duplicated in its entirety the other 2 are only partly documented on the Chu set. Incidentally my Hampton set is number 42 yet I received it the same day as MG (300). Hope Mosaic are happy with their level of sales on this one. Quote

I had already owned the Columbia release of "Ben & Sweets" but it sounds much better on the Mosaic set. Gotta love the Buck Clayton stuff, too! Edited December 7, 2007 by Brute Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 18, 2007 Report Posted December 18, 2007 Onzy Matthews select. An evening listen on the medium fi, rather than down in the dining room over breakfast. Wow! I keep thinking I recognise "Joe and I" by unknown. But I can't place it. Does anyone else get this feeling? MG Quote
