I am looking forward to the inevitable discussions about relative sound quality!

Those wondering about marginal titles which they may not yet have could consider the Walter Davis (with McLean), the Kenny Drew (with Mobley) and the first four Morgans (which make up 2/3 of the nla Mosaic). The first four Mobleys are on the still available Mosaic.

I take it, Hans, that you are not recommending JRVGs. On that subject, I pulled out the TOCJ and JRVG of "Shades Of Redd" last night, as it's a favorite of mine. I decided to A/B them. First up was the TOCJ, which sounded so good that there's no need for anything else (except that it was a little hard-panned and could be pulled in a bit). Then a push on the remote brought up the JRVG; it sounded like I was listening to a $5.00 radio. Uggh! I also have the U.S. reissue, but I didn't play it last night. I recall that it sounds pretty good, though, and it has two extra takes, so it is worth having.

What is the point of yet another CD issue of this material? 24 bit or not, most of this stuff has seen CD issue at least once, and those that haven't already will likely make their way to the US RVG series someday. Let's see some analog-master vinyl or (let the flames begin) SACD issues of this material.

being a huge fan and collector of the original TOCJ series, i was curious as to whether the engineers at toshiba could do anything more with 'em.

to my ears, they have: extended resolution and soundstage that seem to take the TOCJ sound to the next level.

Wow, I'm surprised at the sudden irritation and apparent hostility; no one objected when I first posted this thread back in June 2004...

And what's the difference (and I'm not talking about the sound) between RVG or someone else at Blue Note remastering many of these in 24-bit, which seems to be OK with many board members, and the Japanese doing the same for their own market, which some of the same board members seem to disapprove of?

Perhaps what people are subliminally responding to is the unstated premise of the TOCJ 24 series - that, having given Rudy a go, the Japanese engineers figured they could do better.

If you are only ordering one title you won't have to worry about customs.

In my view the format (SACD vs CD) or the remastering technology (16bit, 24Bit) is rather irrelevant compared to the remastering skill and choices of the engineer.

Technology does make a difference, but usually this alone is not important enough to justify an upgrade of the discs. Only audiophiles with expensive equipment will hear a difference between SACD and CD, or 16Bit and 24Bit remastering, if the remastering engineer took the same choices for frequency balance, dynaimcs, panning, etc.

As far as Blue Note reissues go, I prefer the 90's TOCJ reissues because of the natural non-manipulated sound of the remastering, and I would therefore like to see those disc reprinted instead of yet another new remastering. The TOCJ discs reissued in the spanish Blue Note series are some of the best sounding Blue Note CDs in my collection.
