According to the Braxton group on Yahoo, the duo will happen “probably next Spring in Bologna or next Summer in London.” Not sure if that means 2007 or 2008.

Braxton has long been a Cecil Taylor fan and Taylor has described Braxton as an important artist in interviews. I wonder if the seed was planted following Braxton’s duo recordings with Andrew Cyrille.

Apparently, Braxton will be playing in trios with William Parker and Hamid Drake and Parker and Milford Graves in Italy this March.

This is just getting amazing. Braxton and Cecil, and then a post later, this! I'm there. Wherever 'there' is!

I'd just think that either some things have changed or some music biz cat has some ju-ju. It's a surprise pairing, no doubt.

Yeah - can't figure out how it'll sound. I'm sure that two guys with such vast musical personalities and integrity, however, will produce something at the very least completely fascinating. In some ways, musical success would be a happy by-product of seeing/hearing the two of them work something.

True. Cecil's pairing with Derek Bailey produced one of the most fascinatingly unusual items in either musician's catalog.

But maybe Taylor & Braxton will just do Brubeck tunes :)

Absolutely. That Derek/Cecil thing is astonishing. The first track especially - how many other musicians could, by sheer force of personality, seemingly, have kept Cecil from the keyboard for half an hour or so (that's roughly how long he spends inside the instrument and/or reciting poetry, IIRC)?

That's an AACM dream team. How come no Joseph Jarman?

In the late '60s there were concerts like this all the time (minus young George). :)

As a younger member of the BB who wasn't around to catch many of the masters in their heydays, this is an amazing prospect: a supergroup of 1) compatible (and how!) musicians who 2) are all on top of their games.

What I wouldn't give for a live record as well...

Send satchels of money.

Ha! I was just scrolling through to see if anyone had mentioned the Brubeck record with Braxton on one side and Konitz on the other. BTW I have a vague memory (as many of mine are nowadays) of Braxton and Cecil teamng up in the '70s-- or at least a teaming up being announced.

For whatever it's worth, I like that Brubeck record. There's been enough militant fervor over whether or not Braxton can play in the box/under the table, and I think he fits in fine among more "conservative" company. I'm not sure that anyone less schooled in the idiom would suss out the tension as "unusual".

So no Jarman? Who do I start pestering with emails for a live disc of this tour?

I don't want to speak out of turn about Jarman's current 'powers' - I've only seen him the once, around 9-10 months ago - so I've got little to go on. But, someone said (maybe even here) that he's relatively frail these days.

When I saw him, he was very convincing musically, but he was battling physically with his tenor. His percussion was very musical, and he played some beautiful alto flute and melodica, but his tenor was very weak. [How hard on him anyway to have to follow the intensity of his peak!]. This may well have been hard for him, especially given that Mitchell was on absolutely incendiary form, and showed no signs of being anything other than completely on top of his game.

Don't know how, if at all, that bears on this, however!

I noticed this too. His flute playing was fantastic, but the rest wasn't quite coming together.

Roscoe still plays on a level untouched by anyone around today.

That must have been amazing. To witness the AACM making all those artistic breakthroughs at the peak of their powers....wow. Just thinking about that gives me goosebumps.

"On top of their game" is a very generous overstatement (at least as far as Mitchell, Braxton and Smith are concerned), IMO. I will try to catch them live, of course, but my expectations are not too high. Edited by Д.Д.

Your smug attitude is sad.

Please demonstrate the "degradation" of these musicians and explain your "expertise". Don't bother going to the gigs.

Please detail your reasons for dismissing their current work.
