paul secor Posted April 19, 2008 Report Posted April 19, 2008 Ordered it from a friend's bookstore today. Looking forward to getting it in my hands and reading it. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 19, 2008 Report Posted April 19, 2008 Sadly, George's father passed away the day after the event/concert/book release in Chicago. Good George was home. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted April 29, 2008 Report Posted April 29, 2008 Nice to see Dick Wang getting "props" from all. Quote
jimi089 Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 Nice to see Dick Wang getting "props" from all. Agreed! Much deserved. He's a humble and incredible person who continues to give a lot to the community here. I am proud to call him one of my teachers. Quote
paul secor Posted May 5, 2008 Report Posted May 5, 2008 The copy I ordered from a friend's bookstore came in, but the dustcover was damaged, so he returned it to exchange for another copy, & I'll have to wait a few more days to start reading. Ah well - I've waited this long, a few more days won't matter. Quote
relyles Posted May 5, 2008 Report Posted May 5, 2008 I received my copy last week. It will take a while to get through. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 5, 2008 Report Posted May 5, 2008 Had it over a week and admit I find it impossible to read "front to back". Looked up the entries about me in the index and then started searching out others. Because of the personal nature of the subject and the enormous size (over 600 pages) it has become my favored "bathroom book". I wish it was possible for me to read it front to back. I'd say (at this point) George has done a very fine job Quote

I'd say (at this point) George has done a very fine job Chuck, is that you in the photo of the huge percussion set up, recording the Roscoe Mitchell piece? My copy arrived Saturday. I just glanced through it, and am looking forward to digging in after I finish the Konitz book. Quote
paul secor Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 I find myself doing the same thing when a book like that has an index. I've read a lot of the recent Lee Konitz collection, but all of that has come from checking the index and jumping around. Maybe Larry Kart's publisher had a good idea for the wrong reasons - if I remember correctly, Larry said his book had no index because an index fell outside the budget. I did read Larry's book front to back. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Chuck, is that you in the photo of the huge percussion set up, recording the Roscoe Mitchell piece? Yes, I'm the lame looking white guy not doing anything. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 I'm about halfway through and really, really digging it. Sure, it is a bit jumpy in some of its transition to first-person, and the AACM-European improvisation influence isn't toyed with much beyond "Gittin' To Know Y'All" (where it's negated, naturally), but this is definitely a great book. GregK Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 Just picked it up from a local indie store. It will take me a long time to read this one. Looks like I have just barely scratched the surface of this music. Quote
GregK Posted May 11, 2008 Report Posted May 11, 2008 any particular reason you are referred to as Charles "Chuck" Nessa throughout the book instead of the usual, Chuck? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 11, 2008 Report Posted May 11, 2008 Just a couple of times. I think George was just being "formal". He has never addressed me as Charles. Quote
Larry Kart Posted May 11, 2008 Report Posted May 11, 2008 And which way is that? Mighty Amazon's. Quote
jimi089 Posted May 11, 2008 Report Posted May 11, 2008 Just got my hard cover copy - nice to have an index and pictures which the advance copy did not have. Quote
