PHILLYQ Posted November 29, 2012 Report Posted November 29, 2012 On Saturday I went to see Henry Threadgill at Roulette in Brooklyn, which seems to be his go-to venue in NYC with the demise of the Jazz Gallery. I have no idea if they played new music, but it was beautifully played and had passages of ferocious intensity. He had a larger band this time around, two trumpets, two trombones, acoustic guitar, cello, tuba, drums and even an acoustic bass! Threadgill played his usual flutes and alto. At times everyone dropped out but the guitar, cello and bass and we had a forward-looking string trio. Pretty well attended from what I could see, and I saw Bruce from Downtown Music Gallery sitting in front of me. A great night of music for $25. Quote

jeffcrom Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 My favorite Atlanta saxophonist, my friend and colleague Ben Davis, also plays guitar with the math rock trio Purkinje Shift. They have a CD release party tonight, and I'm about to leave to catch them. (The club is about 10 minutes from my house, and they'll start in about an hour.) Their music, not what I usually listen to at all, is fascinating. Quote

kh1958 Posted January 12, 2013 Report Posted January 12, 2013 (edited) Last night, the Lucky Peterson Band at the Granada Theater. The house was full. Two bands preceded Lucky; I missed the first (an unbearable teenage blues rocker), the second, local blues guitarist Jim Suhler, was tolerable but didn't do much for me. Lucky's band was larger than usual tonight; Mel Brown protege Shawn Kellerman was on guitar (good but bearing no resemblance to his mentor), flying in from Toronto, plus the usual drummer Raul Valdes, plus bass guitar, tenor sax and trumpet. Unfortunately, the sound at the Granada is not that great; overloud and muddy even in the balcony. Still it was an exciting performance, highlighted with Lucky playing some pretty intense blues guitar while sitting astride the Granada's second floor balcony. Edited January 12, 2013 by kh1958 Quote

Larry Kart Posted January 14, 2013 Report Posted January 14, 2013 Last night at the Hungry Brain -- Russ Johnson, Keefe Jackson, Anton Hatwich, Tim Daisy. Johnson continues to please, to say the least, and of the reed partners I've heard him with, Jackson for my taste is the best -- Keefe's big ears and his suitcase being kicked down a flight of stairs obliqueness being a fine complement to Johnson's clear, sometimes lush lyricism. A Lark Ascending Posted January 14, 2013 Report Posted January 14, 2013 (edited) I've heard several of these performers live over the last few years. I really dig Liane Carroll, and of course Pete King, Stan Tracey and Norma Winstone are not to be missed. I must say though, that Emprical and Soweto Kinch leave me cold and less interested. I've seen Empirical a couple of times; last time they were electrifying. Kinch came out in a blaze of glory 5 or 6 years back and I saw a great performance by him; but I can't warm to the hip-hop/jazz mix. I have a couple of his albums - the second I only played once. The other group who don't do it for me is Get the Blessing - saw them do a couple of numbers at a BBC radio recording a few years back and it was rather dull; tried one of their albums and it seemed very earthbound. I think they share some musicians with the electro-rock outfit Portishead so they are inhabiting that worlds that is trying to have a foot in both jazz and indie-rock. Perfectly legitimate place to work but it's not a region that has kept me engaged. The pick of the bunch for me is the Mark Lockheart - not just a good tenor player but a careful composer. King, Tracey, Winstone are all sure fire concerts but I've seen them many times. The Winstone has a great line-up (probably unknowns beyond the UK/Europe) - Norma Winstone: voice; Nikki Iles: piano, accordion; Mark Lockheart (again!): tenor & soprano sax & bass clarinet; Mike Walker: guitar; Steve Watts: double bass; James Maddren: drums.
