What live music are you going to see tonight?

I'm thinking about seeing Nick Goumas and Jason Palmer at Arthur's House of Jazz in Methuen Thursday night, but I just saw them at The Press Room a few months ago. Plus, no one seems able to go to this one, so I'd have to go solo.

I saw Palmer last year at Ronnie's and he was really good. 

Off to the Vortex this evening in Dalston to watch Florian Albenz featuring Greg Osby.

Enjoy that, I like Arbenz and used to buy everything Osby released.

I nearly booked for it but decided on Sakata at Oto as this week's trip out. I wasn't disappointed.

Was it good? I was weighing it up and plumped for the Vortex trip mainly because I so rarely go there now. 

You tipped me off to Arbenz I think, a year or so ago. Thank you for that.

Yes, Sakata was pretty extraordinary. I'd not seen him before and had few preconceptions.

This wasn't the fire breathing Sakata but a far more considered approach. A beautiful tone on both sax and clarinet, especially clarinet. Duo with what I think was some kind of no contact mic set up creating a percussive undertow. Then a trio with Rie Nakajima's small percussion and a poet reciting, in Japanese. Sakata also sang/ intoned and played bells.

All quite spellbinding 

It was very reminiscent of this very good album

Tomorrow night, it's Jaime Baum's sextet at Scullers. Looking forward to this one. Me & the wife are making it a "date night".  I even got us a room at the hotel so I don't have to drive back from Boston after the show.

What a poorly advertised Jazz Festival. I've never heard of this venue and I get a weekly E-mail of the area's Jazz shows from Isabelle d'Entremont and she's never mentioned this venue nor this Jazz festival. Very strange to have this sneak up like this.

BTW - I see that Sullivan Fortner is playing there Sunday and I thought about going but $104 is a bit much, especially since I'm dropping a few bucks Saturday night for "date night".
