bebopbob Posted December 12, 2004 Report Posted December 12, 2004 A very happy birthday to the Chairman of the Board who would have turned 89 today. Celebrating his birthday with: Live at the Sands A Swingin' Affair September of My Years Francis A. & Edward K. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 12, 2004 Report Posted December 12, 2004 This just in: Generalissimo Sinatra is still . . . having birthdays? Quote
BruceH Posted December 12, 2004 Report Posted December 12, 2004 Will have to give Songs For Swingin' Lovers and A Swingin' Affair a spin today. It's a nutty, koo-koo kind of celebration, I know. Quote
skeith Posted December 12, 2004 Report Posted December 12, 2004 I am not ashamed to say I like Frank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
JohnJ Posted December 13, 2004 Report Posted December 13, 2004 I have been exploring a great many jazz vocalists over the last several years but I always come back to Frank. For me, only Billie Holiday comes close. Having somewhat neglected the Columbia Years, I bought the 12 CD complete box and have been working my way through this recently. There is a lot of wonderful stuff here that is causing me to re-evaluate this period, I think even Lon might enjoy some of this material . Quote
catesta Posted December 13, 2004 Report Posted December 13, 2004 I was spinning Sinatra all day Sunday. Quote
ghost of miles Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 Been bingeing on Frank lately. I got a deal last night (and I mean a DEAL) on the Dorsey/Sinatra box, and just ordered a bundle of Capitol-related material from BMG today. Hoping to eventually pick up that Columbia box as well. Now playing: ONLY THE LONELY. Quote
JohnJ Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 Bump. Happy birthday Frank! Will spin some Sinatra this evening. Quote
vajerzy Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 I never tire of listening to Frank...the 12 CD Columbia box is one of the best Quote

alocispepraluger102 Posted December 13, 2007 Report Posted December 13, 2007 (edited) Kill two birds with one stone and celebrate Frank's life by spinning his wonderful Jenkins arranged Christmas album! great idea. it's close at hand. ...and to fully catch frankie's spirits, a bottle of his beloved jack daniel's single barrel should be close at hand, as well. Teasing the Korean Posted December 13, 2007 Report Posted December 13, 2007 (edited) ...my only prob with frankie was that he misjudged when to quit by several decades... I often wished that instead of doing a Rod McKuen album that he'd done a Leonard Cohen album. Imagine Frank doing "Story of Isaac." Also, I wish Frank had done a version of "If You Go Away" by Jacques Brel... Edited December 13, 2007 by Teasing the Korean Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted December 13, 2007 Report Posted December 13, 2007 Two albums I've become obsessed with are: Ring a Ding - with Johnny Mandel - Reprise and Swingin' Brass - with Neal Hefti - Reprise. Quote

Tupac, Notorious BIG... hell, even Nat King Cole!!! ************* If Sinatra had only done SONGS FOR YOUNG LOVERS/SWING EASY, SONGS FOR SWINGING LOVERS, and ONLY THE LONELY, that would be enough to solidify him as a legend in my book. Also dig his work with the Dorsey Orchestra. But the real jewel in the rough is his SINATRA/JOBIM album. Happy birthday, Chairman! Hopefully, he and Phil Hartman are leading another round of "The Sinatra Group" up there! Quote
JSngry Posted December 14, 2007 Report Posted December 14, 2007 After all is siad and done, I can do without most of the swing stuff if I have/want/need to. But the ballads...my god, the ballads.... Quote
