ghost of miles Posted December 26, 2004 Report Posted December 26, 2004 (edited) Figured I'd get the ball rolling, now that Christmas has passed... Warne Marsh, ALL MUSIC (but of course!) Woody Herman, COMP. COLUMBIA 1945-47 Woody Herman, ROAD BAND 1948 (Hep) Ahmad Jamal, CHAMBER MUSIC OF THE NEW JAZZ Miles Davis, SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN BOX Mary Lou Williams, BLACK CHRIST OF THE ANDES Claude Thornhill, 1949-1953 (Hep) Many more that I'm already forgetting... didn't list any of the RVGs because I already had nearly all of them, but I'm sure they'll show up on other folks' lists. What about the Ayler box? Outside of the tree, very little of that had come out before, correct? Therefore, is it classified as "new release" or "re-issue"? Guess we had the same question about PASSING SHIPS last year. Edited December 26, 2004 by ghost of miles Quote

Brad Posted December 27, 2004 Report Posted December 27, 2004 I'm sure it's omission but what about the Jazztet and the Granz sessions. Also not issued here but in Japan are the Bill Evans Village Vanguard sessions. Both fine. For a shorter version, California Here We Come should get special mention. Quote
Johnny E Posted December 27, 2004 Report Posted December 27, 2004 I second the Revolutionary Ensemble's The Psyche! Also: All the America (Emarcy/Universal France) reissues Charles Bukowski Reads His Poetry (Takoma) Albert Ayler - Holy Ghost: Rare & Unissued Recordings (1962-1970) Quote

gdogus Posted December 27, 2004 Report Posted December 27, 2004 (edited) Some reissues I've enjoyed this year: Duke Ellington - Piano in the Background (Columbia, 1960/2004), despite the kinda creepy cover photo. Duke Ellington - Piano in the Foreground (Columbia, 1961/2004), with Aaron Bell (bass) and Sam Woodyard (drums). Andrew Hill - Black Fire (Blue Note RVG, 1963/2004), very happy to have this out. pryan Posted December 27, 2004 Report Posted December 27, 2004 Those Columbia Ellington releases are near the top for me. I picked up ...FOREGROUND a couple of months ago and it really floored me. Great album. Yesterday I grabbed UPTOWN and have only listened to the first five cuts (the original Lp), but it's outstanding too. The sound is beautiful, as is the music. The Miles set is great too. I really dig the Dexter Mosaic Select. RVG-wise, I was blown away by INNER URGE by Joe Henderson. McCoy Tyner's TENDER MOMENTS is another one that I was quite impressed with. The Dexter albums were another long-awaited treat for me. Love Dex on BN! Oh yeah, ALL MUSIC was pretty good too. Haven't really checked out the new Connoisseurs yet, but will probably grab the Wilson, Hill, and Young. Quote
dova Posted December 28, 2004 Report Posted December 28, 2004 (edited) Roy Brooks: "Beat" I have tried to get this on Lp on E-bay and finally gave up so I ordered thr cd from Dusty G. Its is excellent Harp Bop made up of a crack group of Horace Silver alumni. It's on Fresh Sounds and the sound is 7 out of 10 but the music is off the charts. Highly recommended from a drummer (me) who knows his 50-60's Jazz! Hope this helps.... Dova Edited December 28, 2004 by dova Quote

BruceH Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 (edited) My favorite re-issue of the year is All Music----who am I to disagree with Cadence? B-) The Ellington re-issues are right up there too. Oh, and Black Fire. Edited December 30, 2004 by BruceH Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 The Impressed Repressed series of 60s UK jazz. And the Carr-Rendell reissues on BGO. The (jazz) world looks different from this side of the pond! (Actually, it looks different from this side of the Channel!) Quote
Guest akanalog Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 i have not cared for any of the repressed impressed or whathaveyou gilles peterson reissues. they are all ok. but not as good as i had hoped for. one reissue not mentioned i thought was decent though i am sure i will sell it soon is- steve reid "rhythmatism". since i haven't listened to it in a while i can't give much info-reid is a drummer and the only musician of name on the album is arthur blythe. the album has the worst album cover i have seen lately (well neil ardley's "kailedoscope of rainbows" is pretty bad too). but the songs are nice and propulsive and groovy but also kind of out. anyway check this out. it is better than the previous steve reid reissue "nova" which was very short. http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/record-revie...ythmatism.shtml http://www.dustedmagazine.com/reviews/1713 two steve reid reviews. also not mentioned here yet-brute force's album was reissued by sepia tone. i found this album nothing more than decent but it is still worth a mention and perhaps other people will enjoy it more. it is cool-i dig most stuff from the embryo label i have heard more though.
