Late Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 Just saw this movie for the first time last weekend. Not great, but still enjoyed it — and found myself liking it even more the next day (while thinking about it). Did anyone else here like this one? Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 I thought it was ridiculous... in a good way! I laughed out loud several times. Quote

Brad Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 This was one weird movie. Did you read the commentary at imdb.com? That was even weirder. Some body said it was about mormons and anti semitic. Strange. Quote
Late Posted February 15, 2005 Author Report Posted February 15, 2005 Somebody said it was about mormons and anti semitic. Strange. What? That is strange. Maybe they saw something else? A documentary on the combustion of certain dictators? Quote
DTMX Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 "Pedro offers you his protection." Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 I saw it and thought, "this is why we have George Bush as our president". Quote

Alexander Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 I haven't seen it. I'm still ticked at the film's unacknowledged swipe from Elvis Costello (he was using the Napoleon Dynamite name as far back as 1986). Quote
patricia Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 My twenty-year-old daughter saw this a while ago and loved it. She prefaced her recommendation with the comment that it's hilarious, if you can suspend all contact with reality. Off-beat funny, apparently. Quote
Big Al Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 Not great, but still enjoyed it — and found myself liking it even more the next day (while thinking about it). That seems to be the general consensus! This is one of those great "line" movies: you don't really remember what the movie was about, but there are a lot of great quotes in it. Anyone for Rex Kwon Do? Quote
Big Al Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 This was one weird movie. Did you read the commentary at imdb.com? That was even weirder. Some body said it was about mormons and anti semitic. Strange. FWIW, during one of the film commentaries on the DVD, one of the guys (the director, I think) referred to his "LDS missionary work." So I would guess that part of his experiences as a Mormon may have creeped into the film. But that hardly makes it a film about Mormons. Quote

Noj Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 This movie is so hilarious, I swear I knew dorks just like Napoleon Dynamite. I've got a touch of that dorkiness in me--I played D&D in elementary school. Had a Ranger with mad hit points, hell yeah. "It's probably the best drawing I've ever done. I spent 3 hours shading the upper lip." Quote
Eric Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 I really enjoyed it - was turned on to it by my 4th grader. It almost feels old fashioned in a way. Very charming, very funny! Quote
Late Posted February 15, 2005 Author Report Posted February 15, 2005 Was it really filmed in Idaho? GOSH! Quote
Big Al Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 Was it really filmed in Idaho? GOSH! Heckyeah it was; whattya think? GOSH!!! Quote
Late Posted February 15, 2005 Author Report Posted February 15, 2005 (edited) Was it really filmed in Idaho? GOSH! Heckyeah it was; whattya think? GOSH!!! Oh, OK. (You shoulda said "You Idiot!" ) Maybe Blue Note could retitle the tunes from Basra with phrases from this movie. GOSH! Edited February 15, 2005 by Late Quote
Quincy Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 Was it really filmed in Idaho? GOSH! Having spent a few days in a small town in Idaho with similar scenery as in the movie, it added an extra twist to it. I think if I was much younger I would immediately watch Napolean Dynamite 2 or 3 more times to memorize the great lines like I did with Animal House way back when. I'm still tempted to do it anyway. I like how it wasn't afraid to be stupid or sweet, and there's a great deal of cringe-inducing humor. I'm so glad I'm not teenager anymore! Gotta go feed the llama now. Quote

medjuck Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 I was turned on to this movie by my kids. If they hadn't liked it so much I might have left after half an hour or so thinking (mistakenly) that the movie was making fun of Napolean and his family. Knowing my kids had liked it I figured he would triuimph by the end. This is one of theose films that really separates critics from young filmgoers. Critics just don't get that kids aren't just laughing at Napolean-- they identify with him. As do the fimmakers. On the DVD commentary the director keeps saying "This happened to me", or "This happened to my brother." Quote

Jazzdog Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 I saw it and thought, "this is why we have George Bush as our president". I'm not quite sure I am following you on this sentiment. If you mean this movie is just the kind of antidote for the kind of President we now currently have, then this country needs more films like this, I am with you. But if you are indeed implying what I think you are implying then I have to ask you why you think this statement is true. I thought the film was a lot of fun and gets better with each successive viewing. Quote
