kulu se mama Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 i just picked up a gold copy of "tapestry" by carole king that i intend to sell on ebay, but i realized that i had never heard this album. i've heard many of the singles, but i had never heard the complete album. so i am playing it now just to hear it, and the thought popped into my head - what's the most famous album you've never heard? Free For All Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 Buddy Bolden's Greatest Hits. Apparently Wynton has the only copy. Come on, you knew someone was going to do it! Quote
mikeweil Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 Way too many! Same here. Don't give a damn for fame, as long as it is not to my taste. I'm not that much into pop music. Would have to think about famous jazz albums ... Quote
Noj Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 Miles Smiles Hot 5s & 7s Black Saint & The Sinner Lady Many more... Quote
tonym Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 A friend of mine gave me an MP3 CD of about 5 or 6 Stones albums; classics like Let It Bleed etc. Still haven't listened to them. Bits and pieces but not a full disc. Trout Mask Replica. Unfortunately, I did sit through 'Pet Sounds' on the many recommendations of it's 'classic' status Quote
Johnny E Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 I've never heard a complete Beatles album ...or Bob Dylan album...or...heck tons of titles! What's suppose to be the record holder? Isn't it "Dark Side..." Nope, haven't heard that one either... Way too many! Quote
jazzypaul Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 Unfortunately, I did sit through 'Pet Sounds' on the many recommendations of it's 'classic' status You're high, man. Pet Sounds is amazing. I love that record. For me, the most famous album I've never heard all the way through has got to be Blonde on Blonde, which is doubly insane because as a teenager, I was Barry from High Fidelity, in a record store just like Championship Vinyl. But, yeah, somehow, I've never heard it all the way through. Quote

Oh well, the stuff you have heard that a lot of us have never even heard of, makes up for it. Almost. Quote
Johnny E Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 I've never listen to these entire records (all on the top 20 selling albums of all time): AC/DC: Back in Black Fleetwood Mac: Rumours Eagles: Hotel California Bruce Springsteen: Born in the U.S.A (or 'Born to Run' for that matter) Guns N' Roses: Appetite for Destruction As for jazz, That's much harder, let's see.... Never heard- Take Five: Dave Brubeck (I don't think I've ever sat through the whole thing) Rosemary Clooney with Duke Ellington and his Orchestra: Blue Rose (would like to hear it) Oregon: Music of Another Present Era (never had the opportunity) Stan Kenton: New Concepts of Artistry in Rhythm (Kenton bugs me) Can't think of any more. Son-of-a-Weizen Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 I've never watched an episode of "Friends". Quote
JSngry Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 Most of my list would be Classic Rock albums from the 70s and beyond. I lost interest in Mainstream Rock as anything other than "miscellaneous" music and/or driving music (which meant songs, not albums) in late 1970, and never really ever got back on track with it.. kulu se mama Posted April 18, 2005 Author Report Posted April 18, 2005 noj - if i had an extra copy of "black saint" i would give it to you. that record is a mo fo, and i think it was the 2nd jazz cd i ever bought after "a love supreme." you need that one now. weizen - my wife was a big "sex and the city" fan, so i ended up seeing every episode. believe it or not it is a very well written show (with gratuitous nudity to boot). couw Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 never seen the complete Wizard of Oz go see it before you go blind and crippled and grumpy. never heard a complete Beatles album either. The Beatles bug me. Quote
Johnny E Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 ....or 'Sex in the City'. Same here with "Friends" and "Sex in..." but there's a lot of stuff like that for me. Never been in or had a McDonalds or Burger King or Starbucks...never seen the complete Wizard of Oz, etc.......... --- Now playing: The Vandermark 5 - Gyllene So what you're saying is you are completely devoid of anything that connects you to mainstream American life. In a way I envy you, but in another, unless we're talking about very specific topics, I can't take anything you say seriously. Quote

Thanks for the consideration, ksm! Black Saint is a high priority on a ridiculously long list. In fact, there's a number of other highly praised Mingus albums that I haven't heard. I've often balked at buying them because Impulse are usually the highest priced discs. It seems like they're $18.99 everywhere. It's not a tough choice to pay 4 or 5 dollars less for an RVG. Same reason I've bought less Conns. I won't get into the Coltrane on Impulse I've never laid ears on... Quote

Son-of-a-Weizen Posted April 19, 2005 Report Posted April 19, 2005 ...though I did watch an episode of that 'Growing Up Gotti' show on A&E. The sons are the personification of ill-bred wretches. "Um, you mean I'm supposed to use a knife to cut steak, Mom? Duuuuh, I didn't know that" Quote

Jazzmoose Posted April 19, 2005 Report Posted April 19, 2005 Trout Mask Replica. That's the first one that came to mind. Quote
