Dave James
I'm as excited anyone about a Chu Berry Mosaic. I have nothing of him in my collection, but he's one of those bigger than life, legendary type players whose music I've wanted to explore for some time. However, my understanding (and I hope I'm wrong) has always been that most of his recorded work consists of the kind of section work, occasional solo playing he did with Calloway. So, what all should one expect to see included in a rather massive 7 CD set? Up over and out. Edited June 13, 2005 by Dave James
Brownian Motion
While Chu didn't lead many dates (I think a pair), he was often a featured sideman on dates led by others. He appeared on small band sides with Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman, Hot Lips Page, Teddy Wilson, Benny Carter, Wingy Manone, Spike Hughes, Red Allen, and probably others I'm forgetting. He was the featured tenor man with the greatest of Fletcher Henderson's bands--the 1936 aggregation, and recorded at least a dozen titles with that band. He also played briefly with Count Basie, and recorded at least once with him.

Brad
This is obviously great news. I've got a Classics CD of his that is stupendous and the Commodore Tenor Giants cd (with Hawk). I can't wait for this one.
brownie
That great label Meritt released a double LP Chu Berry 'The Calloway Years' 1937-1941 with quite a number of rare alternates (plus several broadcasts) of Calloway and Teddy Wilson sessions among others. Outstanding!
ghost of miles
I don't think the Commodore material will be included--Scott's e-mail specified a set of Sony/BMG holdings, and Commodore currently falls under the Universal umbrella. Still, what a great set! Sounds as if they're constructing it along the lines of the Berigan. And anything done under the auspices of Victor should be included (BMG). Quincy
At the Mosaic website: This set will not be available until 2007. Well, 2007 is closer than it was a few months ago. I'm really looking forward to this set even though I've not heard a note of his as a leader, and have barely even heard him on the side either. In the meantime, the Ellington is still on for November!
