Soul Stream Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 I dig the "Catching Up With" thread on the AAJ Forums. They have a good discussion with Greg Osby right now and have had some other good ones. I wondered if we could try and do the same thing here. Personally, I'd like to get a discussion going with some of the older cats still around. Maybe it's a generational thing since those guys may not be as computer savvy. But certainly, some are. Anybody have any thoughts on this? Quote
mikeweil Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Never participated at AAJ, although I found it a great idea. How about one of the musicians on the board stepping in for starters? Quote
Joe G Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Gettin' Down with Mike Weil!!! I like it! Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Actually I'm opposed to it - I like the fact that great players are just "regular folks" here and aren't obligated to do the whole promotional thing like at other sites. Turn on the spotlight, shove the microphone in someone's face and you might lose something even more precious. Mike Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 AFAIK the "artists" responding on AAJ are paying customers of the site. I recently received a rude reminder that I could not "dis" people who paid for ads on AAJ. I was told I'd be banned if I did it again. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Well, if that's the case, they just moved down another notch in my book, though not at all unexpectedly - that's the feel I have about that whole production. Isn't this just shilling? Or is it a new twist on payola? I guess you would need to *purchase* some "free speech" on that board, Chuck. What would happen then? Mike Quote

Ron S Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Yeah! We can dis each other for free. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Here is a copy/paste of the PM I received from M Ricci: Chuck, I caught your comment under my Lorraine Feather announcement and I can’t say I was happy about it. First off, if you visited the website, you’d see Lorraine was a paid advertiser. I posted that announcement on her behalf. Your primary board is Organissimo—you’re a guest on the AAJ board and I expect you to conduct yourself as a guest. Taking a future shot at an AAJ advertiser or at me on my board will result in an immediate suspension of posting privileges. Michael __________________ Klaatu Barada Nikto! Quote
Soul Stream Posted August 30, 2005 Author Report Posted August 30, 2005 (edited) Wow is right. I also didn't know we had "primary boards".... and...You mean Jim doesn't make ya'll pay to be on this site! I knew I was getting screwed. Well....just a thought. I thought it might be cool to get some of the older cats that maybe don't get a lot of press or chance to talk about their projects, ect. a place to come and hang a little bit, ect.... Guest Chaney Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Chuck: Please tell me that was your last post and visit to AAJ. Quote
Ron S Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Gee, Chuck--I guess Lois Gilbert didn't realize that "your primary board is Organissimo" when she edited a post to claim you for JC. Quote

Brad Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 What an asshole. Even before I saw Chuck's post, my thought is why copy them. After that, fuck them, the idiots. Quote
Dennis_M Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Yet another wow. As someone who has spent the vast majority of my time on AAJ, Ricci's PM really makes me wonder. One thing I have noticed about this site, which I like a lot, is that more people seem to be interested in "old" jazz. That's a big plus for me. Two examples would be the Diz/Bird Uptown release, which got major press here, with hardly any attention on AAJ, and the current Don Ellis thread here. I couldn't imagine a Don Ellis thread at AAJ. Still, I have many friends over there.... I suppose I'll just have to try to keep up with both. Don't confuse the guy who runs AAJ with the members-- there are lots of great people over there. Quote

Ed S Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Personally, I think that the "catching up with" feature is great idea and is certainly one which belongs..........................................on AAJ. My initial thoughts when I saw the thread title were - leave it on AAJ - no need to duplicate it here. I like the atmosphere here and I like the fact that musicians, jazz critics/authors/producers and regular guys like me can co-exist in an atmosphere that is free of stratification. I've checked out some of the Catching up withs on AAJ. The Osby one is very good. The Tom Evered one sucked. Some of the other guys I'm not too familiar with. Nonetheless, my opinion remains the same - it's nice...............for AAJ. Then, upon hearing about the adverstising link and Ricci's comment to Chuck. all I can say is thanks to Jim and Organissimo for this board and to Jim Dye for the Back Room. Quote
