Muse/Cobblestone

Really would like to see the Carlos Garnett Muse albums out on CD (Only Black Love has made it before, to my knowledge), and even more the two Jimmy Heath albums (the first, 'The Gap Sealer', was on Cobblestone originally). Best albums he ever did. Anyone have any knowledge of this possibly happening? Always hoped 32jazz would get around to it (I wrote them about the Heath's), broke my heart when they went under, sold the catalog, whatever it is that happened there.

I have another, later, Garnett Muse CD - Resurgence (Muse MCD 5544), recorded 1995, released 1996. Pretty good, but mining more, for lack of a better term, "mainstream" territory than Black Love.

Agree w/you about The Gap Sealer (aka Jimmy. too. GREAT side, that one. Wasn't aware of a second, different, Muse/Cobblestone album, though. Details, please!

32Jazz did issue a Heath compilation, but I think it was taken from his 70s/80s Orrin Keepnews-produced sessions, including 1974's The Time and The Place, another one much in the vein of Gap Sealer.

Heath really had a nice thing going with that afro/modal/post-bop/semi-electric/whatever bag, I think. Seemed/seems to me that the Heath Brothers thing was a step backward, some very nice arranging on Jimmy's part notwithstanding.

In My Youth made it to a Muse CD, but that that's it. as far as I know.

In My Youth was the only one on CD. Grubbs Brothers were from here in Philly (still live here). Amazingly, all four of the albums by the other great Philly jazz group of the era, Catalyst (Odean Pope, Eddie Green, Tyrone Brown, Sherman Ferguson) were put out by 32jazz in one great 2CD set. Bet that one sold about 12 other copies in addition to mine. Cobblestone did have some nice stuff. Not many remember at this point, but the first couple of Norman Connors albums were pretty great. Something sticks in my mind that "Faraway Lands" was on the expanded version of Art Farmer's 'The Time and the Place' that came out in the early 80's (mid-60's live recordings by the Farmer/Heath quintet),. but I don't remember for sure.

Thx Mike.  Sure wish that one would come out on CD.

It is; on a double cd with Baroque Sketches.

I have the original LP but that one does not have the last 5 songs that the re-issue did.

Those Jimmy Heaths are great; I have them all and remember seeing that Heath band that is on Love and Understanding on Chris Albertson's jazz show that was broadcast on Public Television.

Can't find the post on who questioned Grubbs still being in Philly, but you're right, turns out he's in Maryland now. Was in Philly for a good while (I remember seeing him listed for the MillCreek jazz center workshops, etc.). http://www.carlgrubbs.com/CARLPAGES/ABOUT.html

If and when they do reissue this session, I hope it's without the overdubbed applause.

Why pay rent when you can buy Catalyst's 2-CD set for $53, or Eric Kloss's Doors for $250?

Jeebus.

I actually would make the case that the Catalyst is worth $53, as it is a 2 CD set containing four full albums. That being said, it should be available for a good bit less than that if you are patient (I sold an extra one on ebay for about half of that earlier this year). They were a great early 70's group from Philly, Odean Pope was a monster with them. Eddie Green, the great Tyrone Brown (also a wonderfully kind person), Sherman Ferguson. Classic stuff on their first three albums, though the fourth drifted too commercial, probably in frustration to them being ignored in the marketplace (as was Cobblestone/Muse in general, a crime). $250 for the Kloss is another matter altogether, as much as I like him...

Did anyone pick up the Andorran issue of The Gap Sealer, which contains "bonus" tracks from Love and Understanding? Dusty Groove pulled it from their site (at least for the time being), and I wonder if there might be some legal issues (finally) at stake.

My personal choice is to not support the Andorrans (though I did own two titles at one time), but I'd like to hear this one.
