JSngry Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 (edited) Well, alright then, let's shift the focus to this upcoming project: Mosaic Select: Onzy Matthews (3 CDs) The brilliant West Coast arranger Onzy Matthews was a master of the blues in many hues. He contributed to important recordings by Lou Rawls, Ray Charles and Esther Phillips and made two albums for Capitol, the first of which “Blues With A Touch Of Elegance” is considered by many to be a big band masterpiece. This set collects those albums plus 29 previously unissued Capitol tracks by Matthews. These big band sessions include soloists Sonny Criss, Gabe Baltazar, Curtis Amy, Clifford Scott, Dupree Bolton, Bobby Bryant, Bud Brisbois, Lou Blackburn, Ray Crawford and Richard Groove Holmes. An added bonus is the legendary, previously unissued two-tune session by Earl Anderza and Dupree Bolton for Pacific Jazz. Hel-LO.... Edited April 1, 2007 by JSngry Quote

brownie Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 Don't think I have any Onzy Matthews so far... This one looks interesting! Quote
Soul Stream Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 Mosaic pulls up some funky shizzit to reisssue sometimes....their selects and singles are losing me a little bit. I guess it's all good and to each it's own. Quote

BruceH Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 I've always rather loathed the new, 2CD re-issue of Ellington's Newport album. But a third version??? Actually, I'll probably get it. Quote
BruceH Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 And that Cohn, Newman, Green Select---nice. Quote

Aren't you confusing the Newport 1956 Sony 2CD-set with the Newport 1958 Mosaic Single? Or am I missing something? Newport 1956, Sony 2CD-set: Newport 1958, Mosaic Single: Or were you referring to this old Columbia 2CD-set from the early 1990s (I think), Live at Newport 1958: Edited April 2, 2007 by J.A.W. Quote

OK I admit it: I've never heard of Onzy Matthews but I guess I have to get this to complete my Dupree Bolton collection (i.e. adding to the 2 cds I have ). Also Like to get as much Ray Crawford as I can. Quote
JSngry Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 Onzy Matthews was a very talented arranger, Nothing "boundary stretching" or anything, just damn fine blues-based modern (for the time & place) big band work. A look at the sidemen will tell you what's up with that. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 Put me down for the Onzy - wanted the LPs for a while. He did the arrangements on Groove Holmes' Warner Bros/Loma releases, in case that's been forgotten. MG Quote

Dan Gould Posted April 5, 2007 Report Posted April 5, 2007 The Onzy Matthews is definitely cool news. I've been trying to find the time to clean up my copy of his second Capital album, Sounds for the '60s, but now I'll just wait for this set. Like Jim says, he didn't stretch boundaries but he wrote and arranged very well and had some fine people in his band. Quote
jlhoots Posted April 5, 2007 Report Posted April 5, 2007 $44 for the 2 Dupree Bolton / Earl Anderza cuts. I hope the rest is "good" - I've never heard it. Quote
JSngry Posted April 5, 2007 Report Posted April 5, 2007 "Blues With A Touch Of Elegance", L.A., Capitol, early-mid '60s, that might lead you to expect a Mancini-type marshmellow (sic) thing. Curtis Amy, Sonny Criss, Clifford Scott, etc. might lead you to expect something else. Truth is, it splits the difference in a totally organic fashion. I was pleasantly surprised by this one, and also by the followup, which is a little more "commercial" in repertoire, but not in concept & execution. Gerald Wilson it ain't, but BFD, if you know what I mean. If you want to get a taste of Matthews' writing, check out the Atlantic side he did w/Esther Phillps. No complaints there either. Nothing but hard-swinging, blues-based writing of a very high caliber. Quote

Considering that the Bolton/Anderza has no real connection to this music, your comment almost makes me wonder if Michael was just looking for a Select project that he could stick these two in, and came up with this one, but I think its great that Michael chose such a set for a Select, given that they usually pick a set of LPs that actually saw release. With only two issued albums, this wouldn't even be a possibility as a Select without knowing that there are 29 worthy but unissued tunes to include. Quote
