From an Amazon.com review of 'Under the Jasmin Tree':

MJQ in their prime, January 18, 2005

By BD Wong "BD Wong" (USA) - See all my reviews

I just couldn't let the lame, non-review below stand alone and give the impression that this is anything but a fine album. MJQ came to be on Apple in 1968 because Apple's business manager at the time, Ron Kass, was a big fan. While we may laugh at the naiveté of the ideal now, things were wide open at Apple in those days, so if someone there wanted to release an album by their favorite performer, regardless of genre or sales potential, by god it was released! This album is quite typical of the MJQ sound: light but not shallow, swinging, classically informed. A highlight is John Lewis's suite Three Little Feelings.

The MJQ came to Apple from Atlantic Records and returned to Atlantic after their two albums.

It was still around in 1971, when I bought Imagine--I remember the Apple logo in the center of the LP. When did it stop releasing albums?

The Beatles - as a group or individually - were never really on "Apple Records." They were signed to EMI, and slapping the Apple label on their releases was some kind of a contractual thing they worked out.

In the US, they used this label on Beatles group and solo releases/re-pressings until at least 1975. Apple was long since gone by then.

When the first batch of Apple lps came out in the US I managed a record store in Bloomington. Apple sent us a huge press package including 8x10s of the MJQ, Mary Hopkin, James Taylor and Jackie Lomax. I grabbed the photos and scrawled phony autographs on them. I signed the MJQ pic "the Modern Jazz Quartet". I hung all the photos in the front of the store and our customers were amazed we had personalized shots. <_<

There was a thread about this long ago ...

There was... I went searching for it and then realized I was the one who started it. Your memory just goes out the window...

Did you look behind the dumpster, GoM?

;) I knew somebody around this joint would pick up on that reference.

Great story, Chuck. I remember you telling me about that store... I think it's a Philly cheesesteak place now. And not even a good one...
