ghost of miles Posted December 3, 2007 Report Posted December 3, 2007 At least that's what that feller at the Night Lights site says: Goodman Mosaic set for late spring Quote
king ubu Posted December 4, 2007 Report Posted December 4, 2007 I'm in, too... but only in 10 years or so just before it goes OOP Quote
sidewinder Posted December 4, 2007 Report Posted December 4, 2007 Count me in also for pre-OOP in about 10 years time. I've yet to fully listen through the first one. Quote

ghost of miles Posted December 4, 2007 Author Report Posted December 4, 2007 I've already got some of this material on the Goodman Heps, but yeah, I'm pretty psyched. How much recording did Benny do for Columbia post-1942? Got a copy of Firestone's Goodman bio on the way--hoping to read it before the Mosaic comes out. Quote
Swinging Swede Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 How much recording did Benny do for Columbia post-1942? After the record ban ended, Goodman continued to record for Columbia in 1944-46. He then went to Capitol for 1947-49, but was back on Columbia in 1950-53, during which time he recorded some big band recreations in hi-fi of older tunes, some with Helen Ward doing the vocals once again. After another Capitol stint in 1954-55, he once again went back to Columbia for the 1955-61 period. These years saw quite a few big band sessions too. From the 50s sessions there are several unissued tracks that should see their first release on the Mosaic set. Classics is at 1952 now, but even for the years they already have covered I'm sure the Mosaic will have superior sound. Quote

medjuck Posted December 8, 2007 Report Posted December 8, 2007 Any word on Mosaic's plan for the Ellington Columbias? Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 6, 2008 Author Report Posted March 6, 2008 Got an update today--"on target for release this summer." I think they're hoping to have it out before Father's Day (a good retail time for Mosaic, evidently). Quote
Fer Urbina Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 (edited) I guess this is good news, but now that Sony and BMG are together, I was hoping for a mid-30s to 1942 complete Columbia/RCA big band set. I have the old The Birth Of Swing 3-CD set (BMG ND90601(3), from 1991). I remember reading a review saying that it was a great idea but it sounded like it had been remastered under water. A very accurate description. F Edited March 6, 2008 by Fer Urbina Quote
Dave James Posted May 5, 2008 Report Posted May 5, 2008 (edited) According to blogger extrordinaire Marc Myers at at jazzwax.com, and per discussions with Scott Wenzel at Mosaic, the Goodman Mosaic will be out in September. Here's the text of his post: Benny Goodman on Mosaic. Last week, I checked in with Mosaic Records' set producer Scott Wenzel about the much anticipated Classic Columbia and Okeh Benny Goodman Orchestra Sessions (1939-1958). Scott told me the box will consist of seven discs, cost $119 and likely will be released in September. The amazing Loren Schoenberg is writing the liner notes. Wenzel says the box will include more than 25 previously unissued recordings and one new song, Swanee River (1958), that had been previously undocumented in discographies. This is shaping up to be the box of the year. One to look forward to for sure. Up over and out. Edited May 5, 2008 by Dave James Quote

gmonahan Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 He's back! Ban him again! I couldn't figure out what this meant (I am SO clueless), so I did some digging, and discovered that there was a "GregM" who was evidently banned from the board at some point. I'm not whoever that guy is/was. Had I known there was somebody using this signature who was banned, (or even who hadn't been banned!) I'd have chosen another one. I went to options to see how to change it, and, Luddite that I am, I can't figure out how to do it. If somebody wants to tell me, I'll find another signature, even if it means reverting to "newbie" status. My full name is Greg Monahan. I live in Eastern Oregon where I teach college history. I've been listening to and collecting jazz since the 1960s, and I've posted to this group now for quite a while. Greg M (the never banned one) Quote
Swinging Swede Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 He was banned for the second time just days ago, hence the little joke. We know you're not him (well, at least I do), so there's no need to change your moniker as far as I'm concerned. Although a few probably were confused... Quote

BruceH Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 The Goodman Columbia should be a nice complement to the Goodman Capitol Mosaic. Quote
