brownie Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 chewy, Frank Morgan is heard on the Charlie Parker at Jirayr Zorthian's ranch 1952 jam that came out recently on the RLR label. Before his own GNP album, he also appeared on a Teddy Charles/Wardell Gray session that was reissued on the Wardell Gray Prestige/OJC series. on the Speed Murphy 'New Orbits in Sound' album on GNP and on the Kenny Clarke album 'Telefunken Blues' (with Walter Benton, Milt Jackson, Gerry Wiggins, etc...) on Savoy Quote

Which, I might add, is f'in fantastic... Thirded. That was one of the very first sessions that got me into jazz (on the UK Transatlantic LP issue) ! Teddy Charles on vibes (it was Charles' date I think and the arrangements are his). Edited December 20, 2007 by sidewinder Quote

Swinging Swede Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 But that's the well-known Spud Murphy. We wanna know about Speed Murphy, goddammitt!! Quote
mikeweil Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 The Teddy Charles session with Wardell Gray was Frank Morgan's studio debut - and Sonny Clark's! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 Would make sense about Clark. I remember doing a double-take upon looking at the personnel when I got it. Quote

JSngry Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 Haven't heard it in years, just remember it being a lot more "normal" than the titling would have you think. Still available, though: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1066977 Quote
Chas Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 is this a large ensemble date??? whats up with this spud murphy? tell me abut this one!!!!! Haven't heard it in years, just remember it being a lot more "normal" than the titling would have you think. The title and packaging are misleading - they make it look like a Sun Ra record . That said , New Orbits in Sound is a gem . Murphy's roots in swing-era arranging are in evidence ( particularly harmonically ) ; the intricate ensembles are tight and swinging , the solos fine . As a point of reference , three of the guys from the Hollywood Saxophone Quartet are on the record . Regarding Frank Morgan's contribution , I recall reading on the Jazz West Coast list that Morgan had so much trouble with the charts that Murphy asked Benny Carter to spell him . Carter , who only plays in the ensembles(?) , is not credited on the record . Quote
Niko Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 the Kenny Clarke album 'Telefunken Blues' (with Walter Benton, Milt Jackson, Gerry Wiggins, etc...) on Savoy one of the rare cases where nobody in the thread said this was great (just ordered it anyway) Quote
Niko Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 the Kenny Clarke album 'Telefunken Blues' (with Walter Benton, Milt Jackson, Gerry Wiggins, etc...) on Savoy one of the rare cases where nobody in the thread said this was great (just ordered it anyway) have played telefunken blues three times today, and really like it (actually, nice surprise, unknowingly i bought some cheapo italian reissue which instead of liner notes adds Milt Jackson's Jackson's Ville album... ) Frank Morgan is much much here better than i had expected!
